"You wanted me,here I am"

My favourite superhero has always been Batman by a long way.It's the dark edge to him,the turmoil that makes him a little different.I thought that the previous movie 'Batman Begins' was a fine effort at re-inventing the franchise away from the almost comic to the intensity that is required nowadays.I read so many glowing tributes about 'The Dark Knight' that I looked forward to seeing it with keen interest.When it was over I thought it was good but not quite as fantastic as I'd hoped.

The scting was pretty much first rate.Christian Bale is clearly suited to the role,Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman are as reliable as ever and Aaron Eckhart was better than I expected him to be as Harvey Dent.Probably the most forgetabble character was Maggie Gyllenhaal as Rachel.Obviously,the person that got the most plaudits was Heath Ledger as The Joker.Yes,he was good but in all honesty it was a showcase part and he was bound to stand out.Was he any better than Gary Oldman as Gordon?The honest answer is no he wasn't.Oldman's role was far less showey
but he excelled in every scene he was in and deserves equal praise.There are many well executed action scenes and there is no doubt it is a well made movie.

Why I can't give this five stars is because the movie is too long and the voice of Batman sounds just like the guy off the Carlsberg ads!It does sound a bit daft and should be toned down for the sequel.I think four stars is a fair mark and this is a DVD that I will definitely purchase.

More the Joker's story then Batmans.

Could the movie live up to the hype? Most definitely. Buy this film if only to see Heath Ledger's portrayal of Batman's arch-enemy the Joker. His performance is worth the cost of the blu-ray alone. I always though that Jack Nicholson's performance would set the standard, but Heath Ledger's Joker knocks that into a hat.

This is a continuance of the Dark Knight created originally by Bob Kane and later re-invented by Frank Miller. Batman ain't Mr NIce Guy and nor should he be. In fact Batman comes across as harder and possibly mentally unstable but then again to wear latex and a cape you have to be a bit mad.

If I found one fault in the film, it would be that it is too long. I would have rather this had been extended and made in too parts like Kill Bill. That worked so well and I am sure this would have been just as good and a continuing legacy to Heath Ledgers best performance.

Outstanding - just get beyond the first episode

I watched the first episode of the Wire a few months ago and wasn't sure what to make of it and allowed the box set to gather dust on the shelf. However, while on holiday I started watching 2 or 3 episodes at a time and suddenly it had a rhythm that wasn't there before. This isn't some quick fix TV like Lost or 24, this unfolds like a novel (unsurprising as the show features writing from the likes of Dennis Lehane and George Pelecanos) and rewards the viewer who follows the simple instruction on the cover of the box 'Listen Carefully'. I'm now on series 4 and it gets better and better - I envy those who haven't yet discovered this brilliant series - they have such an treat in store for them.

Starts well but veers into uncertain territory towards the end

This film had a lot of hype surrounding it, so I decided go ahead and watch the DVD edition, knowing little about the film except that it is made by the (in)famous Coen brothers.

I thought the film started off very well, seemed to have a good plot structure in which the main character, Moss, finds the $2 million proceeds of a drug deal that has gone wrong out in the desert. He is eventually followed by a psychopath, Chigurh, who follows him to Mexico (by using the tracker attached to the money), killing plenty of innocent bystanders on the way. Moss outwits Chigurh on seveal occasions but about 3/4 of the way through the film I got the impression that the Coen brothers had either got bored or had no idea how to end it. What results is that the main character Moss, is suddenly killed off with little explanation, nothing more is heard of Chigurh and the film ends with a rather confusing and cryptic ulogy made by the Sheriff who has been tracking the money, Moss and Chigurh.

It's a shame as the start of the film was very promising and the characters were well formed and interesting. I still don't get the ending and would describe it as a complete anti-climax, with no clear vision of what happened.

I actually started to nod off towards the end and I think that any film that does that must have something lacking, since it could not keep my attention.

Not recommended.

world class

Not much can be said that hasnt already been said about season two of the wire,all the superlatives in the world have been used to describe this series,some of course will argue that this isnt as good as season one,i can say for the record that its as good if not better.
This time the drama unfolds in the dockland area of baltimore and involves murder,corruption,greed and much more,this is tense and cagey tv at its very best,laced with a bit more humour than series one but with a snarling attitude being prominent.
The usual band of characters return and we are introduced to new characters who play such an important part in this show,i certainly wont give anymore away but this is brilliant and thats all i have to really say on the issue.

a let down

after the 1st 2 series, 1st=4star, 2nd=5 star, this is a let down, so only 3 stars.
the whole "hamsterdam" thing is gargage and the actors know it, they look a bit embarrased at having to do something that is not believable and it shows.
overall, its messy and lacks focus.
have even debated with myself to stop watching it and get on with something else instead, whereas the 1st 2 series were riviting.
after this, i dont know if i'll give series 4 a go.

Clean sweep needed

I've been following Spooks from the start and season 6 is a decent enough season but more of the characters need to be culled as they are getting a bit stale. Still, definitely one of the best spy dramas around. At least it's not about some skinny twenty-something with big boobs kicking the world's arse like most of what comes out of the US at the mo. .... not that there's anything wrong with that mind you!

What a way to bow out!!

If you love the novel like structure and subtlety of The Wire, this last series will blow you away.

A great series and a great ending. I just can't believe it's over. The game's not the same anymore!!

24 Is back for a explosive movie

I am so looking forward to this. I am a massive huge fan of 24, got all six seasons on dvd and at the moment i am rewatching day 6 before the movie starts on sky one HD In november. i so can't wait for this. Jack bauer rocks. and i have seen the preview trailer for this and it looks amazing and really on the edge of your seat action. if you seen blood diamond well its a bit like this as jack bauer is in africa and it later becomes a fight for surval. and i can't wait until series 7 starts in 2009 on sky. roll on 24!!

series 4.... i dont know if i'd recommend it...

Like most of the other reviewers i am highly impressed by the wire overall. If you have already watched the other three series then you will watch this regardless, but here is the problem. Series 4 is 12-13 hours of character development. Yes, what they generally manage in 2-3 episodes they allocate all 13 episodes to. There is not even much need nor mention of a wire tap in series 4 for goodness sake, which says it all.

So if you are expecting something close to what you loved in series 1-3 then forget it. Of course there is the usual continuity with past characters but the story doesn't offer closure in any area really. The substantive storyline must come in series 5 i guess... which is why i'd only rate series four 6/10.

Stellar box set from the master of suspense

Within this set are some of the greatest movies ever produced in the history of motion pictures. 'Rear Window', a story of a photographer who believes he has witnessed a murder, if only people would believe him, is Hitch's tour de force, capturing the essence of the mans film making technique. 'Psycho' is a well known piece of shock that still resonates 50 years after it first terrified audiences. 'Vertigo' a whirling masterpiece that rewards repeated viewings. 'Rope' an 80 minute claustrophobic piece that harks back to the Leopold and Loeb case of early 20th century Chicago. 'Marnie' and 'The Birds' are classic late Hitchcock. There are a couple of duds, notably 'Topaz' and 'Frenzy' but for £17.99 its almost a steal, so treat yourself to a cinematic education, invest in the master.

Awesome

Intense, visually stunning, compelling!! This film will just simply blow away any preconceptions you may have of other Batman, indeed other super-hero films. It's as much a crime drama as well as a super-hero film and has a very layered story-line concerning the various crime syndicates and how they're reacting to Batman's arrival (Batman Begins). Then The Joker arrives...

Much has been said about Heath Ledger after his tragic death and in regards to this film, but words alone cannot describe the power of his performance. It surely must rank as one of the most creepy, evil and hilariously funny performances of all time!!

When I first saw this film, I have to admit I had mixed feelings about how things resolve themselves (without giving too much away) but when I saw it the second time and, understanding a bit more about the Batman character and his evolution into Gotham's protector, it made a great deal more sense and was ultimately much more satisfying.

This film will leave a lasting impression on you long after the credits have rolled. A cliche I know but a truly heartfelt one, because this is simply an excellent film!!

this is one of the best films ive seen all year....for the people that have only voted this 3 stars or less...has problems. the effects are amazing and the storyline is good, i ave watched it twice in 2 weeks because its that good.

frustrating access to the episodes

For those of us who are not geeks fascinated by clever technology the absence of any guidance on how to access the contents of the discs or finding out what these contents are, the packaging is deeply frustrating. The information not provided with the discs is also a disappointmentm however good the material is.

This is SO good

It's worth noting that the difference between this box set and the other ones you can get is that this one comes in a nice little tin. I much prefer it to the normal 'Three DVDs in a little box with an open side', but only really for 'coolness value'. And now to the films...

The Jason Bourne films are, in my opinion, amongst the best films ever made. Certainly in terms of action thrillers, there is nothing to compare them with. Where the Matrix tried to be too clever and lost its universal appeal, and Bond has never been clever enough, Bourne's adventures can be enjoyed on all sorts of levels. If you want spectacularly put together chases and combat, which whilst outrageous at times never stray to the cartoon-style lengths that characterise, for instance, Die Hard, then they are here. If you want a character who is at once superhuman and yet totally human, you have Matt Damon in superb form as Jason Bourne. If you want an excellent supporting cast, then simply look down the list and the names are all there. If you want lovely photography, set across Europe's capital cities, then you won't be disappointed. And if you want a moral story, then there are messages in these movies which are subtle, and messages which are stark.

And the plots (of each film and the trilogy as a whole) rattle along at an impressive pace, and are complex enough to keep you going, but not so complex as to ever lose interest.

As you can tell, I am a fan!

The DVDs contain some really satisfying extras, too - interviews in those usual 'making of documentary' format, commentaries from the directors, plus some extra documentaries following the filming of some of the particularly iconic sequences, such as the chase across the rooftops of Tangiers in the Bourne Ultimatum.

This trilogy is a must have.

Perfect Poirot Packaging

What I liked about this DVD package, apart from the actual content , was the packaging. Unlike other cash-ins, the box set conforms to the previous 6 Collections. To inform others, the box contains two Amaray cases, with two DVDs/episodes per case, ,similar to other ITV DVDs like"Lewis".

It's a shame you can't buy a life on Amazon

Bad acting, dull nonsense of a script, poorly paced and directed.
Anyone giving this pathetic excuse for a tv programme 5 stars must have a 1 star life.
Stop sitting indoors watching hour upon hour of this patronising rubbish and find some friends instead.
Preferably ones who don't like this bunk.

Great Series But....

....the extras (or rather lack of) were very disappointing. A shame because - up until now - Spooks fans have been spoiled by the cast / director interviews and multiple (and very entertaining) audio commentaries. On saying that however, Spooks is still the best thing on the box and long may it continue.

With forty or so 5 star reviews, I don't need to tell you how good this series is in every way.

However, I would add here for future customers a warning. That is: if you intend to watch/read other Le Carre works after this then DO NOT WATCH THE DOCUMENTARY! There are spoilers in it of Smiley's People, The Constant Gardener and no doubt some others I did not pick up on. I could not believe that it showed the final scene of Smiley's People whilst a newly-purchased copy of the whole series sat unwatched next to my TV set!

A welcome return

I have just watched episode 1 `Mind Games`on TV and enjoyed our super slueths long awaited return to the screen. Having collected all previous series on DVD ,I can`t wait to see and recieve the remaining episodes.Frost will continue to be popular, long after Frost retires.It has a magic formula, and of course the brilliance of Sir David Jason.
