Used Price: £8.00

Review for Tinker Bell [2008]:
Aww! Adorableness
What a lovely, lovely film! It's magical, and glittery and imaginative and beautifully done. The CGI quality is very good, and the ideas are wonderful; from Silvermist fairy manually putting dew-drops on spider webs, to catching the last of the sun's rays for lighting the glow-worms, to tinkering about with a broken ballerina music box... and chubby-cheeked Cheese the mouse, who is almost unbearably cute.

The fairy dust shimmers and sparkles throughout the film and, at its core, it's a lovely story about being true to who you are. Not a theme that will impact adult viewers, perhaps, but it is an excellent message for younger children, and grown ups will be charmed by its prettiness and innocence.

Pixie Hollow is a beautifully imagined place, and with a cast comprising of luminaries such as Anjelica Huston and Jane Horrocks, this isn't low budget cynical nonsense aimed at earning a fast buck before Christmas. It's genuinely witty, heart-warming and smile-making; a film for kids, adults and anyone in between.

The only word that describes it is"darling". Tinkerbell is absolutely darling, and it is highly highly recommended.

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2 Disc Special Edition) [2008]

Our Price: £12.98

Review for The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2 Disc Special Edition) [2008]:
Barnes a perfect prince
I thought this was a great movie. I grew up in the 80's so I'm a sucker for fantasies. Ben Barnes did an excellent job as Prince Caspian, he definitely has the looks, and he did a good job immatating Mandy Patinkin's accent as the great Inigo Montoya in The Princess Bride. That was a good choice. I'm also glad that Barnes is going to play Dorian Gray in the new Dorian Gray movie, and I got more excited when I found out that Colin Firth was going to play Lord Henry, which is one of the best literary characters of all time. With Colin Firth and Ben Barnes there will be double eye candy in this one, especially in period costume. Anyhoo, back to Narnia. I didn't know that the dvd release in the UK is sooner than when it comes out in the US. It don't come out in the states until Dec. 2 (three days before my birthday). I would really like to see Barnes in more films (especially period films).

If I was to play hide and seek with anyone, I would hope there was a wardrobe involved so I could escape to Narnia and Prince Caspian.

Review for Sleeping Beauty (50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) [1958]:
They don't make 'em like this any more
This has always been my favourite Disney film, and I am so glad it's been given the loving restoration it deserves.

The fantastic detail and 1950s graphic take of gothic and medieval styles is positively breathtaking. For Walt Disney it was ground breaking (and almost bankrupting) to create something so meticulously detailed and stylistically consistent right down to the backgrounds, and the result is beautiful and atmospheric. The extras are all interesting, detailing the conceptual side of things, and added a whole new perspective on what was always my favourite childhood film (even though I was terrified of Maleficent and convinced she was under my bed).

Amazing as the new computer technology is, it just doesn't for me have the artistic soul and wonder of this kind of traditional animation (no offence to those talented folk who work long and hard creating it, it's just not my bag). Now we strive for 3D realism, in movies like this it was for a blending of styles/genres and a stylistic vision that I feel lost in the computer age. I doubt we'll see animation like this again, and for me that's a crying shame.

And on the character side of things... Flora, Fauna and Merriweather still crack me up, twenty years later.

Enchanted [2007]

Used Price: £8.09
New Price: £4.97

Review for Enchanted [2007]:
Enchanting
I appreciate a movie studio who can give the audience a knowing wink while poking copious amounts of fun at itself. Disney delivers!

The movie is both a parody of and a loving tribute to Disney movies. There's not a single dramatic convention or stereotype that doesn't get lampooned, yet the story has a lot of heart and you root for the characters. The songs are as fun as ever - kids will enjoy it as a basic fairytale, adults will laugh and smile as they recognise the clever jokes and references. Disney manage to bring an animated movie to the real world, as absurd as that is, but instead of falling flat on its face it shows us precisely why we have cartoons and the mirror they hold up for us - with a wink and a nudge!

The extras are also very enlightening; it's extremely impressive just how many Disney movies are slyly referenced as well as the more obvious overtones. The name of the restuarant comes from Lady and the Tramp, tap dancing grandads in the park also tap danced on the roof for Mary Poppins, the voices of some Disney princesses make cameos... you can go on, but at heart this is really just a classic Disney story. It's fun, frothy, it sparkles but it's also got heart and intelligence to it. It's a brilliant piece from people who clearly love and respect Disney movies while understanding what makes them tick.

Amy Adams and James Marsden are to be particularly commended for making cartoon characters human while never letting go of the fact that they are cartoon characters with all the conventions and silliness that goes along with it!

Camp Rock rocks?
I'm a die hard Jonas Brothers fan but I have to admit I was disopointed by it's corny-ness and writing. The actors could have done so much better but Disney can't seem to make it anymore
Despite this it still rocks and has some amazingly catchy songs and the Jonas Brothers so look fine :]

Review for WALL-E [Blu-ray] [2008]:
A Masterpiece of Cinematic Animation
Each time I have seen a film from Pixar Studio, I have been impressed not only with its animation, but excellent plot too. This time, however, Pixar Studio has rendered a true cinematic animation masterpiece, one which should be recognized as memorable as the great Walt Disney films of the 1930s and 1940s. A masterpiece which ought to appeal to kids of all ages. In"Wall - E" Pixar has a spellbinding example - maybe the first - of a romantic science fiction thriller that lacks a dull moment, even though much of the film lacks substantial dialogue. So who cares whether the robot Wall - E can speak fluent English; audiences will recognize him as an admirable and lovable creature, whose very actions remind me at least of Charlie Chaplin's dull-witted tramp (Indeed, I wouldn't be surprised at all if this was the intention of Pixar Studio's animators and writers.).

Centuries after humanity has fled a severely over-polluted Earth for the relatively clean sanctuary of interstellar space, Wall - E toils alone as the very last trash compactor robot, in the deserted ruins of what seems to be New York City. Then one day Wall - E's fate is literally sent from the Heavens, with the arrival of a strange new robot. What follows will truly delight the hearts and cheer the souls of children of all ages. Older"children" may grasp some of the subtle sociological and political references scattered throughout the film, but younger ones will recognize that this is a film focused primarily on the themes of friendship, love and romance. A film that I am certain is destined to become a major landmark in the annals of cinematic animation; one that is a masterpiece already.

Review for 101 Dalmatians Platinum Edition [1961]:
Seeing Spots Can Be Fun
Life is lonely for bachelor Pongo (Rod Taylor) and his pet Roger (Ben Wright). Roger is a composer living alone in London except for his faithful Dalmatian companion. That changes when Roger meets Anita (Lisa Davis) who just happens to own Dalmatian Perdita (Cate Bauer). Soon the two couples are married and the dogs are expecting puppies.

But all is not rosy. Anita's childhood friend Cruella de Vil (Betty Lou Gerson) has decided a spotted fur coat is the must have fashion statement of the season. When Roger refuses to sell the puppies, she decides to steal them. Soon, Pongo and Perdita are on an all out rescue mission. Can they find their puppies in time?

This movie expertly balances the fine line between comedy and suspense for kids. There are some wonderfully funny scenes early in the film as we get to know the characters. Even Cruella's early scenes are more funny then scary. It's only as the film develops that the suspense builds. Heck, even rewatching the film, I get caught up in the climatic scene and can't take my eyes off the screen.

Much of the success of this film is due to Cruella. She is a memorable character, and everything meshes perfectly to make her work right.

This film represented a style change for Disney animation with the invention of the Xerox process. Frankly, I prefer the softer styles of their earlier and later films, but that's only a minor distraction.

Fans of the film will love the new two disc set. The film has been restored and certainly looks and sounds great. The first disc also features two different pop up trivia tracks with some fun bits of information. Disc two contains some games for kids and plenty of behind the scenes stuff for fans. There are several deleted songs. I found the correspondence between the author of the original book and Walt Disney fascinating. And the new 30 minute documentary told me all kinds of new (to me) behind the scenes information about the making of this film.

This new release is worth adding to your Disney collection. It will entertain you and your family for years to come.

Aladdin (Musical Masterpiece Edition) [1992]

New Price: £6.99

Review for Aladdin (Musical Masterpiece Edition) [1992]:
Disney at it's best!
This film has to be one of if not THE best Disney film there is. The story is great, the voices perfect, the songs brilliant! My favourite song from Aladdin is probably Friend Like Me but that's because I love Genie. However, all the songs are great in this film, there's none that you roll your eyes to because Disney have that great way of including a lovely slowie into a film but still having the humour there (like with A Whole New World).

Loved this film when I was little and chuffed now that my littl'un loves it too. Great fun for family viewing and still funny for adults!

Review for National Treasure 2 - Book Of Secrets [2007]:
Decent family entertainment and good fun.
I like this sort of adventure film. There are far too few made, if you ask me. I guess most film makers think they will inevitably be compared to Indiana Jones, which is a shame.

So how does this compare to Indiana Jones? Not as good, a bit far-fetched, though I cant say why without giving bits of the plot away, but nonetheless a very entertaining romp.

Its the kind of film that eats your time away. There aren't any real dull moments, and its a shame when it has to finish.

I won't give it five stars, because it could be better, but it definately deserves 4.

Review for Mary Poppins (2 Disc 40th Anniversary Special Edition):
The movie every kid on earth should wacth
Mary Poppins is undoubtedly among the most terrific stories ever told on celluloid for children. It has it all: comedy, music, values, colours, dreams all packed in 2 hours together with the beautiful Julie Andrews. If you wacthed it when you were young the memory will stay with you for the rest of your life, if you didn't you still have the chanche to come back in time and enjoy it for the first time. GO AND GET A COPY.

Someone wrote that they found it boring, lacking in plot and full of cheesy music. My opinion is that you would have liked it as a kid, but growing up you simply lost your capability of astonishment.

Dumbo (Special Edition) [1941]

Our Price: £5.48
Used Price: £5.00
New Price: £5.18

Review for Dumbo (Special Edition) [1941]:
One of Disney's best
Dumbo was probably the first Disney film I ever saw. I remember popping my old video tape into the player, sitting through all the previews and copyright warnings, and then smile with joy as the opening credits came up. I loved Dumbo because it was colourful and fun, despite the intense cruelty that our little protagonist and his mother go through.

Of course, there were some things I noticed that I'd been blind to at the age of three. For example, there are a few WWII refernces - I'll leave you to figure them out. Another example is the crows. They sound a lot like the stereotype of black people in America at the time. This might seem a little insensitive, but trust me, there's worse things out there. Dumbo is not racist. Remember that those crows, aside from Timothy Mouse, are the only characters who feel sympathy for Dumbo. I feel that the crows all share a close bond and that they are somewhat outcasts too. And oh yes, they have the most catchy and irresistable song!

Dumbo is such an adorable little elephant. Like similar characters such as Pinocchio and Bambi, he has that round 'pudding like' charm. This gives him the appeal of a human baby. He has adorable little blue eyes which give away all his emotion. He does not speak a single word and yet he moves you to tears. It's the way he acts and his innocent expressions that really talk to you. As well as not being much of a talker, Dumbo isn't much of a thinker either. He just naively follows Timothy mouse, all in his own little world.
The other characters are interesting too. Timothy is a fiesty little rodent with a kind heart. The other elephants remind me of the girls at my school who like nothing more than to gossip. I might also mention the train - Casey Junior. He seems to be alive but he isn't creepy. (Thomas the Tank Engine scared the heck out of me!) He has his own catchy rhythm which is just pure fun to listen to. The Ringmaster has the most funny expressions too!

The soundtrack is a real treat. If you do not tear up during 'Baby Mine,' then please see your doctor for your heart has turned into coal. 'Pink Elephants on Parade' is a funny but slightly disturbing sequence that gets stuck in your head with it's clever lyrics and artistic animation.

Dumbo is a very colourful film, but there are times when life in the circus can be very bleak. In an attempt to protect a her youngster from some harassing boys, Mrs Jumbo is cruelly seperated from her baby and poor Dumbo is ignored by the other elephants. The film expertly conbines the romantic view of the circus - bright lights and colours, animals and clowns with the realities - greed, hard work and animal cruelty. Anyone who thinks that some circuses can be 'humane,' then they'd better see Dumbo as it will change their mind.

Bambi may be at the top for me, but Dumbo is just too good to put down. For a film that's only sixty minutes long, it's a real emotional feast upon the eyes and the mind.
However, I'm only giving four stars because Dumbo really needs restoring and remastering. Hope there's a Platinum Edition coming soon.

Charming
This film is nearly 38 years old. Yet it still has charm, a good plot decent songs, and excellent voiceovers. Yes it can be a little one dimensional in terms of animation, but that is part of its charm. It still manages to entertain very well and that is entirely the point.
It remains a worthwhile purchase, even if it is only because your kids friends have never seen it!

Classic disney at its utmost best!
when asked what my favourite film is ill invariably say disneys Robin hood and the blank looks on the questioners face normally is just a comon occurance that until they have seen the film they dont understand why its so good!

Children and adults alike will love this film, ok the graphics are dated but for 1973 they are very good, the story is jolly, heart warming and a great take on an old fable.

The characters are all animals which makes a change, they are all voiced amazingly and fitting to the animal in every way! The film isnt long but with small children thats ok and the music gets stuck in your head for a good day after seeing it!

Its a definate classic for families and for the disney lover this is a must have. if you havent seen it wtch it youll love it i guarentee!

Review for Ratatouille [2007]:
Not Pixar at their very best
I am a fan of most of the Pixar films but have to say that I found this one to be slightly disappointing. It is brilliantly animated,Paris looks glorious and it is well voiced. For some reason though,'Ratatouille' just didn't hold my attention and it isn't a film that I would watch again.
The highlight comes from the voice of Peter O' Toole as Anton Ego.He clearly has a ball as the arrogant food critic and all of the scenes he features in are a delight. On the whole I did feel that this isn't in the same league as 'Toy Story 1 & 2' or 'A Bug's Life'.A fair effort but not Pixar's best.

Our Price: £5.48
Used Price: £10.80
New Price: £5.48

Review for The Sword In The Stone (45th Anniversary Edition) [1963]:
Much better than I once thought

As other reviewers have duly noted, this film (first released in 1963) is based on the first of four parts of T.H. White's The Once and Future King (1958), focusing on Arthur's birth, childhood, and youth before he became king of England. The film has been reissued as a 45th anniversary edition. It features the well-selected voices of Sebastian Cabot (Sir Ector/Narrator), Karl Swenson (Merlin), Rickie Sorensen (Arthur/"Wart"), Junius Matthews (Archimedes), and Alan Napier (Sir Pelinore). Frankly, I was underwhelmed when I first saw it many years ago and had little patience with the antics. While seeing it again recently, I found the film much more entertaining and frequently charming.

In our family, a film's"acid test" for grandchildren is for them to want to see it again, immediately. After I watched it with several of the younger ones, they requested that but agreed, instead, to check out"Merlin's New Magical Academy Game," passing on the other bonus features. I would not rank The Sword in the Stone among the"classic" animated features produced by Disney (e.g. Bambi, Beauty and the Beast, Dumbo, Pinocchio, and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) and Pixar (e.g. Finding Nemo, Ratatouille, Toy Story, Toy Story 2, and WALL-E) as well as DreamWorks' Antz and Shrek. However, how many animation features do?

Perhaps there are other grandparents and parents who also saw The Sword in the Stone years ago, as did I, and are not inclined to have a copy available for children to see. I urge them to reconsider because it possesses a unique"magic" of its own. I think they will also enjoy the bonus features. Hopefully this reissued version will attract the interest and gain the appreciation the film clearly deserves.

Good features..bad 3D!!!
This is an entertaining movie with behind the scenes features and would have been better off without adding that there is a 3D part to it when there isnt. I bought this DVD hoping to get a good movie and a real 3D experience, but the 3D is really poor and is definatley not worth wearing those plastic"3D" glasses for about an hour and a half. Reccomended if you are a huge fan of HM and MC though!
