Review for Doctor Who - The Complete Series 3 Box Set [2007]:
Tennant is THE Doctor
For many years I`ve measured every successive Doctor against MY Doctor - Jon Pertwee - all after Tom Baker have paled in comparison until Christopher Eccleston and his"I`m The Doctor by the way ,now run for your life" in"Rose" the Series 1 opener.Throughout Series 2 I missed him but grew to appreciate the constant running ,even the whinyness of Chav-bird Rose became bearable (hated her btw) and of course the GREAT David Tennant who now owns the role thanks to this Great third series.
Highlights for me have been the fact that we escaped Catherine Tate for a year (yay!!) ,met The Judoon ,became reaquainted with Captain Jack and his possible"future self" The Face of Boe ,more Cat-people (Brannigan rocked man!) ,learnt just how the"last Dalek" originated (check series 1) and learnt just who Saxon was ,we got The Master back briefly and more of The Time War plus UNIT !.I loved the cliffhanger ending with"The Titanic" .
Low-lights - Catherine Tate as Donna (hated her shouting all the time - I kinda like Donna now a little in Series 4) , Martha (Freema Agyeman is just so wooden she`d have been better as a Tree in Series 1 LOL),the far too mannish and unconvincing Captain in"42" (Ripley did butch better in Aliens LOL),we lost The Face of Boe and still no Brigadier!
We`re still awaiting definitive info on The Time War though and was it Paul McGann that fought it ?It looked possible in the first few Christopher Ecceleston scenes in"Rose".

Review for Doctor Who - The Complete BBC Series 2 Box Set:
The Excellence Continued
With this series we are fresh off the regeneration from the previous Doctor played by Christopher Eccleston and now David Tennant has a lot to live up to; he does it and he does it with style. Billie Piper comes back as the magical Rose Tyler and we are given a series where she not only has to handle the notion of a different looking Doctor, but she has to handle the fact that she's falling in love with him and we're given hints that he's falling in love with Rose.

Episode 1: New Earth: In the year 5 Billion and 23 the Doctor takes Rose to the new home of the human race, simply called New Earth and he takes her to the aptly named New New York. There the Doctor meets up with an old friend the Face of Boe but he stumbles upon a secret in the hospital basement, who is lurking there and what have they done with Rose?

Episode 2: Tooth and Claw: Landing in 1879 Scotland, the Tenth Doctor and Rose meet Queen Victoria, travelling with her to spend the night at the Torchwood Estate. However, a group of warrior monks have sinister plans for the monarch, and the full moon is about to summon a creature out of legend.

Episode 3: School Reunion: The Doctor goes undercover in a school as John Smith, children are mysteriously going missing and the Doctor needs to find out why. He meets not one but two old friends and Rose finds a bit of competition in one of them.

Episode 4: The Girl In The Fireplace: The Doctor accidentally stumbles across a derelict spaceship that seems to just be floating unmanned. The weirdest thing is that the spaceship has a fireplace but as he looks through it, he discovers it's a time window to 1727 Paris. What he finds there isn't a bunch of French Aristocrats, he finds something much more sinister

Episode 5: Rise of the Cybermen: After the TARDIS makes a crash landing on the Earth of another universe, Rose discovers her father is alive and rich, Mickey encounters his alternative self, and the Tenth Doctor learns one of his oldest and deadliest foes is about to be reborn.

Episode 6: The Age Of Steel: Lumic sends out a signal across London through the earpieces to get everyone walking towards Battersea Power Station to get the upgrade. The Doctor isn't just fighting a robot army, he's fighting the conscience of Rose who's determined to save her Father.

Episode 7: The Idiots Lantern: In 1953 London, the police are abducting people from their homes. The people of Britain gather around their new-fangled"tele-vision" sets to celebrate the new Queen's coronation -- but something strange is affecting the signal.

Episode 8: The Impossible Planet:The TARDIS lands in a base on a planet orbiting a black hole, an allegedly impossible situation -- according to the physics of the show -- that stumps even the Tenth Doctor. The base crew are drilling to the centre of the world, to claim the power that keeps it in orbit for the good of the Human Empire. However, an ancient evil is down there too, and he is awake...

Episode 9: The Satan Pit: With the TARDIS seemingly lost, Rose and the remaining humans are trapped on the base with the possessed Ood, while the planet floats helplessly towards a black hole. Meanwhile, the Tenth Doctor is about to discover exactly what"Beast" is trapped in the heart of the impossible planet...

Episode 10: Love & Monsters: An ordinary man named Elton Pope becomes obsessed with a man called the Doctor and his strange blue box, joining a group of like-minded people in hopes of finding him. But when the mysterious Victor Kennedy joins the group, the fun stops and Elton discovers a darker side to his hobby.

Episode 11: Fear Her: It's the 2012 London Olympics and in one street children are going missing and there's no explanation for it. Rose and the Doctor go on a quest to find out what's happening to the children but the key to this is a young girl called Chloe who likes to draw.

Episode 12: Army Of Ghosts: As the ghosts of loved ones appear, the whole world celebrates. But as the Doctor investigates he believes that there is a more sinister motive behind their appearence. And deep within the Torchwood tower, a mysterious sphere containing the greatest enemies of the Doctor is opened...

Episode 13: Doomsday: Earth becomes the battlefield for the greatest and deadliest war of all time, as the Daleks and the Cybermen clash with the whole universe at stake. The Doctor and Rose, reunited with old friends and Cybermen experts Mickey and Jake, race to find a way to bring the war to an end before it brings about the destruction of the whole of space and time. But the Doctor soon faces an even bigger dilemma - could ending the war mean the death of Rose?

This is an amazing series but we are given an unfortunate goodbye to Rose Tyler, how do we say goodbye? Well you will have to see for yourself.

Review for Red Dwarf: Anniversary Edition - All The Shows:
Smegging Wonderful!
I received this product this morning (I was expecting to receive it in two days' time, so that's a good start!)

I haven't opened it as of yet, but this is just a 'first impression' description for those of you who are curious.

The collection comes in an A4-sized package, about the size of an A4 book, for example, which suprised me - I was expecting a regular-sized boxset - like most other boxsets - with about 8-10 individual 'sections', each containing a disc. I am wrong. It contains 10 discs featuring every episode from every series of Red Dwarf. As mentioned, I have yet to open the boxset, but from the size and shape of it, I can only assume that the discs are all layed flat and possibly 'overlapping' one another slightly, as opposed to them being laid side-by-side. It is approximately 1 inch-1.5 inches thick.

The cover looks elegant, predominantly black, and the front of the set simply has the Red Dwarf logo and the words"Anniversary Edition, ALL THE SHOWS". The back cover has an image of Red Dwarf itself (the main (red) ship that the crew predominantly travelled on) with images of all 10 discs protruding from the side of it.

Overall this set looks wonderful and is a definite must-have for all fans of the series. If you simply want Red Dwarf for just the shows and nothing more, then this is the set to buy. I am unsure as to whether or not this set has any extras at all, however I doubt that it does as the cover quite clearly says,"ALL THE SHOWS".

Nevertheless, Red Dwarf for me is all about the programme itself and unless you are somebody who likes to sit there watching hours and hours of extras and outtakes/'Smegs', then this is the best Red Dwarf DVD set available to buy, in my opinion; and at around the £30.00 mark it's definitely a wonderful investment!

Highly recommended!

Review for Doctor Who - The Complete BBC Series 1 Box Set [2005]:
This is pulp riding of the coat tails of a great series and special effects
The original Doctor Who was about ideas. That has gone. The original series lasting for 27 years manage to keep the feeling, mantras, and backstrory/culture(mostly). In this revamp all that is thrown away. This is worse even than the Peter Cushing movies for losing the plot. Science Fiction is escapism. The more you try to bring in gitty reality and ordinary people's unbalanced personalities, the more it becomes something else. In science fiction you travel to other worlds. In this, you never leave Earth (unless its to go to New Earth or New New Earth). Aliens are replaced by horror movie products such as were-wolves or the devil or zombies. I guess this is what happens as our society because more"educated" but less aware of what science is about. The so called"high-points" of all the series so far is to bring back old creatures for the classic series. Without that this series would have almost no new ideas. I have kept watching these series as I have always been a Doctor Who fan but without the name it would just be a fusion of James Bond and bad horror. The creators of this series eliminated all the back-story from the previous series (ie. the other Timelords, Gallifrey etc). Many people feel bitter that Chris Eccleston left after this series but the fact is that David Tennett was better. Its a shame that Billy Piper didn't leave at the same time as she is a very poor actress.

Review for Babylon 5: The Complete Collection + The Lost Tales (Exclusive to Amazon.co.uk):
Bulky but worth it
i was surprised by how big the box was but when i opened it, it was like christmas and easter all came at once!, i bet some people would give their 4 limbs to get all the b5 movies, tv series and extras all at a bargin price of £67 through express and £10 VAT, moreover it arrived within a few hours of ordering it, and started playing it as soon as a arranged the dvd's into order.

The quality is as i expected it from 1990's, however it said that this version is digitally remastered, but i don't see any improvement to the sound or visual which i though was a little strange however, it does not matter though. but thanks to amazon it's something i can just watch and pull up the episode without any real problem.

"It was the dawn of the third age of mankind - ten years after the Earth-Minbari War. The Babylon Project was a dream, given form. Its goal: to prevent another war, by creating a place where humans and aliens can work out their differences peacefully. It's a port of call - home away from home - for diplomats, hustlers, entrepreneurs, and wanderers. Humans and aliens, wrapped in two million, five hundred thousand tons of spinning metal... all alone in the night. It can be a dangerous place, but it's our last best hope for peace. This is the story of the last of the Babylon stations. The name of the place is Babylon 5."

Very enjoyable series, along with the G'Kar and Mollari relationship, very reminisent of Quark and Odo of Deep space 9, it's a brilliant plot throughout the entire series from Minor skirmishes between narn and centuari, a massive war between vorlons and the shadows, the babylon 5 freedom forces and Earth Alliance to the ISA and Drakh war. throughout the series you get to explore many personailites between the cast and the roles they play, you even get to see an episode where it's not based off any main character but rather two engineers who get to see more action then they would in 4 years anywhere else, it's similar to stargate SG1's attempt.

A must buy if you don't wish to collect the whole series and spending more money then you would do otherwise.

Review for Star Trek: The Next Generation - Season 1 [1990]:
A better series than some Trekkers say
A lot of people think this is the weakest of TNG seasons, but for my money it's one of the strongest with good stories and an interesting new group of characters, not all of them making it to later seasons. The problem is that like all the seasons of TNG, the picture quality is ropey. Why spend all that money on sets, actors and effects and shoot it on low quality tape that always looks soft, even on DVD? So not a total recommendation because of the picture quality. Maybe when they get to Blu-Ray they can improve it a bit?

Doctor Who - The Brain Of Morbius [1976]

New Price: £5.25

Review for Doctor Who - The Brain Of Morbius [1976]:
Horror-Who at it's best, thrilling stuff!
Barcode: 5014503181628

From the opening shots of Karn, eerily dark and swathed in thick swirling fog, you know you're in for a real classic hiding behind-sofa-ride with this serial. In the very first episode you get a gruesome beheading, a crippled servant with a hook for an arm, later delights coming in the form of a brain in a jar of green goo, the Doctor almost being burnt at the stake and a monster cobbled together from various body parts.

It's scary stuff with some real-edge-of-your seat moments, one of the most surprising being when Solon shoots his assistant Condo, literally ripping a hole in his chest, spurting blood. It's not something you'd see in the revived series and in many ways, this raw, untamed feel just adds to the dark overtones of this story. It raises questions on the ethics of what true life is in relation to Condo's subservience to Solon and Morbius's half-life as a brain trapped in a transparent case, a slave to base instinct.

The true star of this serial has to be Philip Madoc as Solon, his performance is deliciously sinister, his perseverance through all the odds to try and revive Morbius admirable, despite the gravity of what this entails. The scene where Condo knocks Morbius' brain onto the floor to Solon's dismay is particularly poignant as he cries of `such intellect, wasted on a stone floor by a mindless brute'. This is a man that has devoted himself to a cause and has lost all compassion for others, from the way he continually deceives poor Condo to his underhand poisoning of the Doctor and Sarah, his true intentions masked wonderfully behind a façade of a nice, well-spoken academic.

Villains like Solon are always a joy to watch, the battle of intellects between them and the Doctor is what the show was made for. Tom Baker puts in a great show too in this episode, really shining in the scenes with the Sisterhood as he tries to convince them of his pure intentions. Liz Sladen gets some nice moments too, her feistiness sparking brilliantly off the Doctor, and poor girl, she goes through a lot in this serial! Poisoned, tied up to a table, blinded and then chased and beaten up by Morbius - and speaking of her blindness, I think she acted this really well. Yes, the whirling arms might look a little overstated compared to today's more conservative styles of acting but if you put yourself in her shoes, if you had just lost your sight you'd be absolutely terrified and Liz really conveys this in her voice.

When this serial was first broadcast it got between 9-10 million viewers per episode. This was Doctor Who in its element, Tom Baker taking the series through the peak of its success and from serials like this you can see how so many elements of it have gone on to influence further Who episodes. It is these linkages - this episode obviously taking root from the story of Frankenstein and his monster - that weave their through history, the tension and the theme of science pushed to its most terrifying. Even the imagery lives on, the Sybilline Sisterhood of recent episode `The Fires Of Pompeii being almost a carbon copy of the Sisterhood of Karn in this episode.

Brilliantly acted, dark brooding sets and a super-tense plot + a really good behind the scenes documentary `Getting A Head' which has some fab interviews with the cast and crew - this is yet another fantastic release in the Doctor Who DVD range.

Review for The X Files: I Want To Believe (2 disc Special Edition including Bonus Digital Copy) [2008]:
The X-Files: I Want to Forget It
It's been so many years since The X-Files TV series ended. Half of it's original audience gave up after six or seven years searching for the elusive truth with Mulder and Scully, and when it was finally laid to rest at the start of the new millennium it seemed it went out with a whimper rather than a bang. So X-Files fans can rejoice at the release of the new movie - a stand-alone, unrelated sequel to the original X-Files movie. Mulder and Scully are back. Only this time they have very little to do and very little plot to make sense of.

The opening is impressive, lending atmosphere and tension to an intriguing set-up very nicely. Then, with the exception of a highly amusing George Bush gag, the proceeding 1hr 50mins goes futher and further downhill at a rate I never knew a film possible to travel at. The X-Files: I Want to Believe is a tremendous blunder, quite possibly the biggest wasted opportunity imaginable. The potential for compelling stand-alone plotlines for a new movie were endless, and yet somehow, with the entire world of the paranormal at their fingertips for creative assimilation, Chris Carter and co-writer Frank Spotnitz chose a storyline not even worthy of a 40 minute episode from their past endeavours on the show. This movie is terrible. It reintroduces our ex-FBI agents without coherent thought at how we last left them. It wipes the slate clean and forgets the alien conspiracy nonsense in favour of scientific experiments gone wrong without a drop of sensible exposition to explain the madness on display. Just what were Carter and Spotnitz thinking?

First of all the plot is pure garbage. It involves scientific research gone awry and its experiments somehow linked to the visions of a convicted paedophile, ex-priest with second sight played by an on-form Billy Connolly. Somehow this devastatingly lite-plot is beefed up into a two hour ordeal that not even the reunion of Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny can save. Their relationship is stale, and their performances seem to be going through the motions in order to recapture their now dwindled chemistry once so popular with audiences. The story is bare bones and totally inexplicable. Even The X-files TV series at its worst would never have even considered telling a story this pointless and under whelming. Scully is really the main character this time around and her sub-plot involving a sick child strikes a note of interest until it conveniently finds itself becoming relevant to the main plot without acknowledging the colossal coincidence of it all. Everything in the movie seems like it was birthed from the first draft of a script that Carter himself would have thrown out ten years ago.

The supporting cast is rounded out with more modern"cool and popular" people such as Amanda Peet (coaxing in a role of no thanks whatsoever) and most strangely of all Xzibit, a hip-hop star in search of something to do onscreen. Comedian Connolly brings pathos to his role and easily makes his scenes with Anderson the best things in the movie. Everything else, quite frankly sucks the big one. The action is leaden, the villains silly and unintentionally amusing, the climax laboured to the point that when it finishes you are like"Is that it? Is that the movie? You've got to be kidding?" All you get is a"surprise" cameo from a cast member, Mulder swinging around a crow bar and hitting nothing and Scully performing an emergency surgery OFF-screen.

The expectation amongst the fans was huge and although I class myself as a casual viewer of the series I still find this long-awaited return to the iconic success of the 90's an incredible insult to audiences across the board. And my sympathy especially goes out to those poor hardcore fans that waited all these years with the hopes of a new movie only to get left holding the bag.

The show was good for a few years, the first movie was enjoyable, the leading stars could get the job done and sizzle with screen chemistry and Carter was the man with the plan. But that was back in the old days when these people knew how to deliver the goods, while this dreck leaves you less wanting to believe and more wanting to forget. Dire.

Review for The X Files - The Complete Collector's Edition:
Nice to get back to the series
After watching the second X files film (which was a bit disappointing) I felt very nostalgic for the series which had spawned it. Only £65 or so on amazon, so that's about 30p per episode, plus you get the first feature film. Most people must know what the show is about, right? An x file is a case which has been deemed to be unsolvable by the FBI, usually because it has some sort of paranormal explanation which no normal agent will think about. Agent Fox Mulder set about investigating the X Files and became an expert in the paranormal, after coming to believe he witnessed his little sister being abducted by aliens. His partner is Dana Scully, who is assigned to work with him to use her scientific and medical background. Each episode usually starts off with a weird occurence, often a murder. The agents are called in, Mulder has some weird explanation (vampires, zombies, ghosts, aliens, mutants, freaks, time travel) and scully tries to come up with more plausible ideas. Usually mulder is right. About 10% of the episodes involve an ongoing storyline about a conspiracy in the government to hide evidence of aliens and their plot to colonise the planet, linked to Mulder's sister's abduction. Those episodes often show us the most personal sides of the agents and their lives.

Having forgotten most of the episodes, it was a bit of a shock to see just how ridiculous and awful some of them really were! Too many of them had a weird, vague ending with no clear resolution, this became more and more evident in season 9, esp whenever Monica Reyes was involved.

Watch from season 1, when the characters are still fresh, and you see Dana Scully as a bright young agent, yet to be dragged into giving up her normal life to an endless search for the truth, all the way to season 9, where Mulder has gone into hiding and been replaced by new agents Doggett and Reyes, with scully having finally had to give up her skepticism and take on the role of a believer. The evolution of the two key characters is great, as is that of their supervisor, Assistant director Skinner. I mentioned there were many awful espisodes, but you get to see all the great ones too - Beyond the sea, Tooms, Sleepless, One Breath, Clyde Bruckman's final repose, Small potatoes, Demons.... list goes on and on! The worst has got to be fearful symmetry - where aliens are abducting and impregnating zoo animals.... Plus you get to watch all the mythology episodes.

There are extras of course. Many episodes have deleted scenes (almost none of them were of any interest, except for in the pilot episode where Dana Scully was supposed to have a boyfriend). There are little documentaries discussing each season, most of which are dull. There are also a few shows trying to pull together the various threads of the mythology to make them easier to understand - alien abduction, the black oil, colonisation, supersoldiers.

Box set is a bargain, v glad to be back with these episodes. Seasons 6,7 and 9 were prob the worst of the series, but every series has at least one gem, so try going through them all!

never a big fan..but
I have held true to The Next Generation being the only good spin off but I cannot deny a certain attraction to Voyager. This season is the best I have seen out of the dribs and drabs of the series and the finale will have you wanting more even if you have only just been won over. Alice Krige returns to the Borg queen role in a great showdown that echos more of The Next Generation's series finale.

Review for The X Files: I Want To Believe (1 Disc Edition with Exclusive Free X Files Poster):
Sadly lacking anything that made the X-Files so popular in the first place.
Trying to bring back the X-Files after such a long absence was always going to be tough. In order to satisfy the fans there are elements that need to in the new film. These include a large helping of sci-fi, some strong references to alien life forms, simmering sexual tension between Mulder and Scully, exciting action scenes and a dash of humour throughout. Easy. So all of this is in the second movie then..................err no, in fact hardly any of it is.

What we end up with is a slow and totally uninteresting plot about a priest (who is a convicted paedophile) who may, or may not be a clairvoyant. As far as a"traditional" X-file story this is about as much as we get. The rest involves a pointless sub-plot with Scully and a terminally ill child and a story involving someone stealing body parts. There is a slight twist at the end but it's so obvious you might not even notice it's happened.

One of the reasons this film is so bad is that David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson look bored and confused. Neither of their characters wants to be involved in the investigation involving the priest and are co-erced into doing so. Sadly this also appears to be the case with the actors as they simply read their lines without any emotion or conviction whatsoever. It's almost as if they signed on to do another movie without ever knowing what the story is, or seeing a finished script. (Also David Duchovny has the worst ever fake beard at the start of the film!!)

I was really looking forward to this but for someone who has seen every episode of the nine TV seasons it felt like I was watching something totally unrelated. There was none of the"feel" or atmosphere of the TV show and the budget was obviously spent entirely on the stars salaries. Considering it was written by Chris Crater, who created the X-Files, the disappointment is even greater.

I honestly can't find anything worth recommending about this film. Fans of the X-Files will likely feel cheated and people who are new to it will be lost. It doesn't work on any level. I was hoping that this would lead to some more X-Files movies, or maybe even season 10, but if this is the best on offer then I will stick with originals.

Review for Star Trek Voyager - Season 2 (Slimline Edition):
Mediocre season 2
after season 1's dissapointment comes season 2 which picks up a bit better, the crew encounter the kazon much more then previously encountered and masterminded by the vengeful cardassian woman, Seska whos cover was broken by Kes and the doctor in season 1. meanwhile exploration is put on back burner this season as it involves a bit more action which makes up for the ok or dire storyline. however the end episode of season 2 works out a great springboard to work off for season 3 to begin with a bang.

recommended in order to find out why the voyager crew was dumped on a primitive planet by the kazon, and what plans a few rogue crewmembers have in-store for the kazon on board voyager as well as outside.

Review for Doctor Who : Voyage Of The Damned - Christmas Special with Kylie [2007]:
Fun
This episode is, by and large, a typical Davies production: witty, funny, full of adventure, and yes, full of holes. It's good fun to watch, the special effects are good and Kylie Minogue a great addition to the cast. Overall very enjoyable, which is what counts.

Review for Star Trek Voyager - Season 1 (Slimline Edition) [1995]:
Average season start
As i have always maintained Season 1 of voyager is the most boring star trek season of all of them. it might not be what everyone might be thinking however i recommend season 1 so you know how season 2 works out.

Certain characters and races/organizations you might not be aware of if you have never watched TNG or DS9 but you have watched VOY, are listed below:

Federation, Cardassians, Kazon, Bajorans, Ocampans, Talaxians, Marquis
Quark, Morn, Q

Review for Star Trek Voyager - Season 4 (Slimline Edition):
The borg are here to stay!
Season 4 opens up with a battle between borg and 8472, however the crew of voyager strikes a deal and later find out the borg brought the 8472 into the star trek universe, however after persuding the 8472 aliens to give up targeting voyager. a borg drone who was the voice for the voyager alliance was disconnected from the hive who joins the crew despite her attitude throughout the season, she adjusts and realizes the power of being who she is. in that respect the borg queen becomes ever more interested in voyager, the defected borg drone and janeway.

This season is where one character is lost Kes, who becomes more then who she was and gained a new one in the form of 7 of 9, the defected borg drone. this season is more of a character building season because of 7 of 9.

Review for Star Trek Voyager - Season 3 (Slimline Edition):
Borg, Time Travel and Holodeck malfunctions! ST: Voyager - season three
Season Three was when Voyager really kicked into gear, with some great stories, aliens and effects. There is fun, 'False Profits', time travel, the two-part 'Future's End', serious goings on in 'Darkling' when the Doctor messes with his holoprogram, and Captain Janeway gets to be an action hero in 'Macrocosm', when Voyager is invaded by a nasty virus, and Janeway strips to her vest, gets sweaty (and just a little sexy) and kicks some alien butt!
In 'Warlord' Kes gets taken over by an ancient warlord, and gets some serious screen time (about time too!), and almost the first girl-on-girl Trek kiss [that was saved for DS9].
All in all, Season Three is a good one - and points to the good times to come. There is a fair smattering of stories and the two crews (Federation and Marquis) are now almost fully intergrated, the characters becoming very familiar to the viewer...and is that a romance blossoming between bad-boy Tom Paris and half-Klingon half-human Belanna Torres? It starts with the conclusion to 'Basics' and ends with the first part of 'Scorpion'. Well worth having.
