Review for WALL-E (2 Disc Special Edition with Slinky, Exclusive to Amazon.co.uk):
A funny, and thought provoking animation
I had to drag my girlfriend and my mates to go see this - i was only going to see it purely because the character in the adverts seemed hilarious. I was thoroughly entertained, yet also amazed at the depth of what is basically a cartoon for kids. On a superficial level, brilliant graphics and rendering with simply superb textures and lighting that make the visuals close to life-like, and in addition to this excellent simulated camera focus effects with appropriate blurring and out of focus effects depending on the scene that would usually only be seen in traditionally shot camera movies. May not be immediately noticed, but if you pay attention to it you may find it enriching the whole cinematic experience. And of course for the kids, characters that are somehow endearing and easy to empathise and connect with given the lack of dialogue - testament to superb animation and the detailed thought processes in making up the characters and their traits and how to convey them without relying on speech.

However the real intelligence in this movie, and what makes this so appealing to adults, and subtly educational to kids, is the references to the numerous current issues that dominate today. Climate change, globalisation, capitalism amongst others. It maybe easy to criticize disney for being hypocritical in attempting to educate about such issues, but i can only applaud them in not just making an animation which is almost certainly going to make them a lot of money, but also at least attempts to educate and make kids (and adults) think of some of the issues that affect us today and will continue to do so in the future. Lets hope intelligent film making continues in the animated genre. Confused? just go watch it for yourselves. Brilliant movie - even my girlfriend cant wait for the dvd :)

Tinker Bell [2008]

Our Price: £11.98
Used Price: £8.00
New Price: £10.78

Review for Tinker Bell [2008]:
Aww! Adorableness
What a lovely, lovely film! It's magical, and glittery and imaginative and beautifully done. The CGI quality is very good, and the ideas are wonderful; from Silvermist fairy manually putting dew-drops on spider webs, to catching the last of the sun's rays for lighting the glow-worms, to tinkering about with a broken ballerina music box... and chubby-cheeked Cheese the mouse, who is almost unbearably cute.

The fairy dust shimmers and sparkles throughout the film and, at its core, it's a lovely story about being true to who you are. Not a theme that will impact adult viewers, perhaps, but it is an excellent message for younger children, and grown ups will be charmed by its prettiness and innocence.

Pixie Hollow is a beautifully imagined place, and with a cast comprising of luminaries such as Anjelica Huston and Jane Horrocks, this isn't low budget cynical nonsense aimed at earning a fast buck before Christmas. It's genuinely witty, heart-warming and smile-making; a film for kids, adults and anyone in between.

The only word that describes it is"darling". Tinkerbell is absolutely darling, and it is highly highly recommended.

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2 Disc Special Edition) [2008]

Our Price: £12.98

Review for The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2 Disc Special Edition) [2008]:
Barnes a perfect prince
I thought this was a great movie. I grew up in the 80's so I'm a sucker for fantasies. Ben Barnes did an excellent job as Prince Caspian, he definitely has the looks, and he did a good job immatating Mandy Patinkin's accent as the great Inigo Montoya in The Princess Bride. That was a good choice. I'm also glad that Barnes is going to play Dorian Gray in the new Dorian Gray movie, and I got more excited when I found out that Colin Firth was going to play Lord Henry, which is one of the best literary characters of all time. With Colin Firth and Ben Barnes there will be double eye candy in this one, especially in period costume. Anyhoo, back to Narnia. I didn't know that the dvd release in the UK is sooner than when it comes out in the US. It don't come out in the states until Dec. 2 (three days before my birthday). I would really like to see Barnes in more films (especially period films).

If I was to play hide and seek with anyone, I would hope there was a wardrobe involved so I could escape to Narnia and Prince Caspian.

Review for Sleeping Beauty (50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) [1958]:
Sleeping Beauty
This region 2 UK 50th anniversary 2 disc edition has I'm sad to say, an authoring fault. It is not properly flagged as anamorphic 16x9, it appears the initial batch as I have had two copies now, are non anamorphic, resulting in the main feature playing with black bars on all four sides of the screen, rather than the usual widescreen bars top and bottom.

And before anyone asks, I have my dvd player and screen set up correctly.

Enchanted [2007]

Used Price: £8.09

Review for Enchanted [2007]:
Enchanting
I appreciate a movie studio who can give the audience a knowing wink while poking copious amounts of fun at itself. Disney delivers!

The movie is both a parody of and a loving tribute to Disney movies. There's not a single dramatic convention or stereotype that doesn't get lampooned, yet the story has a lot of heart and you root for the characters. The songs are as fun as ever - kids will enjoy it as a basic fairytale, adults will laugh and smile as they recognise the clever jokes and references. Disney manage to bring an animated movie to the real world, as absurd as that is, but instead of falling flat on its face it shows us precisely why we have cartoons and the mirror they hold up for us - with a wink and a nudge!

The extras are also very enlightening; it's extremely impressive just how many Disney movies are slyly referenced as well as the more obvious overtones. The name of the restuarant comes from Lady and the Tramp, tap dancing grandads in the park also tap danced on the roof for Mary Poppins, the voices of some Disney princesses make cameos... you can go on, but at heart this is really just a classic Disney story. It's fun, frothy, it sparkles but it's also got heart and intelligence to it. It's a brilliant piece from people who clearly love and respect Disney movies while understanding what makes them tick.

Amy Adams and James Marsden are to be particularly commended for making cartoon characters human while never letting go of the fact that they are cartoon characters with all the conventions and silliness that goes along with it!

Star Wars - The Clone Wars [2008]

Our Price: £10.98

Review for Star Wars - The Clone Wars [2008]:
Worth naming Star Wars Episode 7, or just disappointing?
Star Wars: The Clone Wars is an 1hr 1/2 long movie which is set to mark the beginning of a brand new series airing on Cartoon Network. I can't watch the series for some reason but it isn't airing here where I live but I have been to the cinema to see the film and I was impressed. The beginning of the film where they are fighting in a large city is incredible as is the raid on the monastery but when Anakin and Ahsoka arrive on Tatooine, I fought it was a bit over-the-top but never mind.
The film itself is good and snappy, action-filled without the romantic bits of Episode II and the long boring conversations of the first half of Episode III, this film is excellent!

The Jungle Book : 40th Anniversary 2 Disc Special Edition [1967] [1968]

Review for The Jungle Book : 40th Anniversary 2 Disc Special Edition [1967] [1968]:
Look for the bear necessities
In one of Walt Disney's classics, Bagheera the panther offers to take Mowgli, a young boy, to the man village before the evil tiger Shere Khan gets to him.

This family adventure is a classic, made so by a beautiful sentimental plot about human emotions, including loyalty, sensitivity and most importantly love. And these human emotions are decoded through the animals of the jungle.

With the enchanting and fun loving actions of Baloo the bear and the honest and hard actions of Bagheera, do audiences get that true feel of the human spirit, and the facts of life, to have fun, but to face the truth as well, which is also reflected in some of the most catchy and enjoyable songs ever created for a Disney picture.

"The Bear Necessities","Trust in me" and"That's what friends are for" are the brightest gems to have ever been written and are beautifully directed and told through humorous and delightful techniques by the team.

Though the plot can be a little slow at times, the characters are all joys to watch, particularly the bad guys Khan and Kaa, who light up the film in their own dark way. Khan's dialogue is perhaps the best ever written for an animated villain and even in my adult years I find him chilling to watch.

The film explores the depths of the jungle with a keen interest in different animals, which are explored in a comic fashion from the forgettable elephant to the bored vultures, the Jungle Book simply has everything.

From an excellent plot, to the wonderful sing-along songs, it is a true landmark in the animation genre.

Review for Little Mermaid (2 Disc Special Edition) [1989]:
yet another Disney masterpiece
joint with Lion King as being the best Disney film ever and another one of my favourite films of all time.
the animation is breathtaking and shows us the greatest set of characters ever.
Arial is the definitive Disney princess...who actually fights for what she believes in and remains a truely beautiful Disney creation.
Sabastean = the most hilarious Disney character after Robin Williams Genie in Aladdin.
Ursula is neck in neck with Sleeping Beauty's Melefacent as the ultimate Disney villain.
a remarkable film and Disney at its most epic and beautiful best that in turn marked a new golden age of Disney animation.
the astonishing Beauty & The Beast, Aladdin, and (my fave)The Lion King followed this masterpiece.
simply amazing

New Price: £17.98

Review for Star Wars - Prequel Trilogy [1999]:
Hit and miss but ultimately essential viewing!!
Would I buy this box set on the strength of the films alone? I would say yes, but in the first two episodes George Lucas has bought everything to the screen except real characters that you want to follow. Seeing as this is a story of one, maybe two pivotal characters then that really is its undoing. The first two films are a mixed bag of spectacular effects full of cannon fodder robots, dull moments and awful voice overs. The third, is simply excellent, Revenge of the Sith recaptures the spirit of the original trilogy and gives it depth and tragedy, it really pulls all the parts together to give you a satisfying, yet expected conclusion.

The Phantom Menace :- Skip to the Pod Race and the final light sabre battle and you basically have the best of a mixed bag. With the introduction of Jar Jar Binks you find yourself shouting No No No at the screen. What was George thinking. A fully realised CGI maybe? But to approve an embarrasing cartoon vocal is unforgivable. The underwater city is uninvolving and the land battle is an unconvincing CGI mish mash. Don't get me wrong there are moments of beauty in the film, such as a short battle with Darth Maul before the Naboo Royal Starship takes off against a grim Tatooine backdrop and another with Darth Maul scouring the Tatooine desert through hi-tech binoculars before descending into the town on his Sith speeder. Also the final battle with Darth Mau...l. You get the message, the Darth Maul sequences really make this film. The Anakin storyline is weak and 'forced'...no pun intended. 7/10

Attack of Clones :- The pace of the trilogy is notched up a level and everything just got a lot bigger, technology-wise. But with the introduction of dialogue spouting from a grown up Anakin we are left squirming all over again. Poor script or poor delivery. I think both. The same for Obi Wan, basically he sounds posh and it just doesn't work for me as he delivers the same tone regardless of any danger he finds himself in.

The opening car chase sequence is too loose, there is no real sense of peril and is just an excuse to deliver a fully realised CGI world, which it does succeed, but at the expense of everything else.

On the plus side the Bounty Hunter, Jango Fett vs Obi Wan fight sequence set against the Slave I spacecraft and torrid weather conditions are great.

The assembly of the Jedi fighting as one also excites but is under used.

The effects are fantastic compared to anything else of this genre but are over used and generate no real scale. Basically we are taken into a war which has no storyline. How fantastic if they could of combined the 'Full Metal Jacket' approach of travelling on foot through a broken landscape with the high tech world of Star Wars encapsulating. So much more personal and meaningful.

Everything is bigger and to some degree better. But I can't help feeling it is only setting up the final conflict. I know thats obvious but a more enjoyable journey getting there would of been appreciated. This not a film you will return to unless watching the trilogy in its entirety. 7/10

Revenge of the Sith :- A simply stunning, dramatic and rewarding yet dark conclusion. This episode opens magnificently with Obi Wan and Anakin fighting through a full scale space epic encounter to rescue Chancellor Palpatine from the grip of General Grevious, who is one of the series best characters, multi-limbed and represents a true threat.

For me, the Emperor steals the show and his delivery is devious yet menacing, preying on Anakin's frailties which are the backbone to this story.

The transition from Anakin to Darth Vader is mesmerising, in the end you feel Anakin's pain.

From the Wookie battles, again not a scene much more a fly-by, to the lava ladened Mustafar light sabre battle on the Outer Rim this movie becomes a visceral experience but is backed up with depth and real emotion.

As the movie ends and all the loose ends tie up you cannot help to feel caught up in what is 'just' a sci-fi movie. But it has been a long journey and it is still the original trilogy that gives this final episode its poignancy. 10/10

This final film is what the Star Wars franchise deserves and maybe you should just buy it stand alone. But that would simply be an injustice.

Milk it, baby, milk it!
Yes, the Star Wars cash cow is on show again presented nicely so it might win"best of breed". I suppose in a way this is George Lucas's revenge on the public, who pestered him for the original trilogy on dvd and then pestered him some more for the original original versions on dvd. My only surprise is that it doesn't say Limited Edition (yawn)

Review for The Spiderwick Chronicles [2008]:
Great entertainment
Had some time to kill and went to see this film. Given the overhype of the Narnia films and several other book adaptations I was surprised and delighted to find out it was great entertainment and well worth the ticket price.

Freddie Highmore does a superb job playing identical twins Jared and Simon, identical by looks but not by attitude and mannerisms, who have moved to a rural house once owned by their great uncle. Jared, who is always getting into trouble, finds a large and mysterious book about the magical realm all around the house written by his great uncle many years before.

The plot may be a little scary for younger children but it's fast paced and very watchable.

All the other episodes have been shown to death on Nick JR and I have to be honest I feel really short changed.I could'nt send it back because I had opened the sellophane packaging so I guess it will be sold on e bay sometime soon. Please be aware there is no new material on this disc, so unless your child is new to Peppa, AVOID!!!!!!!!!
