WALL-E (2 Disc Special Edition with Slinky, Exclusive to Amazon.co.uk)

Our Price: £12.98
New Price: £12.98

Review for WALL-E (2 Disc Special Edition with Slinky, Exclusive to Amazon.co.uk):
A funny, and thought provoking animation
I had to drag my girlfriend and my mates to go see this - i was only going to see it purely because the character in the adverts seemed hilarious. I was thoroughly entertained, yet also amazed at the depth of what is basically a cartoon for kids. On a superficial level, brilliant graphics and rendering with simply superb textures and lighting that make the visuals close to life-like, and in addition to this excellent simulated camera focus effects with appropriate blurring and out of focus effects depending on the scene that would usually only be seen in traditionally shot camera movies. May not be immediately noticed, but if you pay attention to it you may find it enriching the whole cinematic experience. And of course for the kids, characters that are somehow endearing and easy to empathise and connect with given the lack of dialogue - testament to superb animation and the detailed thought processes in making up the characters and their traits and how to convey them without relying on speech.

However the real intelligence in this movie, and what makes this so appealing to adults, and subtly educational to kids, is the references to the numerous current issues that dominate today. Climate change, globalisation, capitalism amongst others. It maybe easy to criticize disney for being hypocritical in attempting to educate about such issues, but i can only applaud them in not just making an animation which is almost certainly going to make them a lot of money, but also at least attempts to educate and make kids (and adults) think of some of the issues that affect us today and will continue to do so in the future. Lets hope intelligent film making continues in the animated genre. Confused? just go watch it for yourselves. Brilliant movie - even my girlfriend cant wait for the dvd :)

Review for Iron Man (with Free Marvel Iron Man Comic Book, Exclusive to Amazon.co.uk):
A good film or a god mix of special effects and computer graphics ?
Iron Man is a b-level superhero and this film is in line with the character. Very amazing scenes of GC and special effects, but the plot is poor (if non ridicolous) the cast is good, with Downey perfect for the role, but Paltrow and Bridges almost wasted. If you like superhero movies is better than Hulk (2003 ed) and F4 (one or two). But the film lacks of the complexity of Spiderman trilogy or the last Batmans. A good film for teen ??

Review for The Dark Knight - 2-Disc Batmask (Ltd Edition Exclusive to Amazon.co.uk):
Awesome
Intense, visually stunning, compelling!! This film will just simply blow away any preconceptions you may have of other Batman, indeed other super-hero films. It's as much a crime drama as well as a super-hero film and has a very layered story-line concerning the various crime syndicates and how they're reacting to Batman's arrival (Batman Begins). Then The Joker arrives...

Much has been said about Heath Ledger after his tragic death and in regards to this film, but words alone cannot describe the power of his performance. It surely must rank as one of the most creepy, evil and hilariously funny performances of all time!!

When I first saw this film, I have to admit I had mixed feelings about how things resolve themselves (without giving too much away) but when I saw it the second time and, understanding a bit more about the Batman character and his evolution into Gotham's protector, it made a great deal more sense and was ultimately much more satisfying.

This film will leave a lasting impression on you long after the credits have rolled. A cliche I know but a truly heartfelt one, because this is simply an excellent film!!

Review for The Godfather Trilogy : Remastered Collection - Limited Edition Steelbook Metal Packaging (Exclusive To Amazon.co.uk) [1971]:
Nice new restorations, but why no chronological edit?
I love that these landmark movies got a squeaky clean restoration, added special features, and that Godfather II is on one disc instead of two. As a Godfather fan, of course I've ordered this new set, BUT I can't wait for a definitive chronological edit to hit DVD someday (soon?).

Previous chronlogical edits include: (1)"Godfather 1902-1959: The Complete Epic" which is a VHS-only 402 min. chronological edit of Parts I & II not available on DVD or laserdisc. Doesn't include Part III (171 min.) which would take it to 573 min. total; (2)"Godfather Trilogy: 1901-1980" which is a Laserdisc chronological 583 min. edit of Parts I, II, & III (std 171 min. for Part III); and (3)"Godfather Saga" (aka Mario Puzo's The Godfather Saga: The Complete Novel for Television) which is a chronological 605 min. edit of Parts I, II, & III with added footage (434 min. for Parts I & II plus std 171 min. for Part III) done for TV broadcast only. This version was never issued commercially in any format. Some lucky people like me were able to record it off TV.

ALL of these chronological versions are slightly different and all contain at least some footage not contained on the other versions! Come on Francis, give the fans a super complete chronologiocal edit sooner rather than later!

I never knew i missed so much !!
This has to be the best purchase i have ever made...The story is breathtaking in its size and the time span it covers is just as impressive.
I remember sitting glued to the T.V. when it was shown and could never get enough as the shows seemed to fly. But what astounds me the most is the amount of detail and story lines i had forgotten...or missed.
Buy this set and you will be amazed at the number of sub-plots and character interaction that is worked into the episodes and films.
This truly is the"best of the best".....i`m off to watch it again.

Doc Martin - The Edge - Feature Length Special (Exclusive to Amazon.co.uk)

Our Price: £8.99
New Price: £8.99

Review for Doc Martin - The Edge - Feature Length Special (Exclusive to Amazon.co.uk):
surprisingly dull
My husband and I LOVE this series, but we were very surprised at the dull writing and boring pace of this mini movie. We had figured that, as the follow-up to the utterly hilarious and touching end to season two, this would continue in the same vain. Instead, my husband fell asleep and I found myself wanting to fast forward many scenes. The plot progression and new characters were strangely below par, and the recurring characters seemed to strain when delivering poorly written dialogue. The only exception I would make is"doctor's friend", who turns up to review complaints about the Doc's bedside manner. This character was delicious and worked very well at bringing out wonderfully horrible behavior from the Doc.

Granted, the movie does provide valuable background for the character of Louisa Glasson. And there are a few moments that are quite funny. But overall, I wish I hadn't spent the money. All I really needed to know is that Ms. Glasson's dad is a thief and a gambler who stole from a Portwenn charity, and that her mom left them when she was very young. Apparently, the producers have decided to make Caroline Catz's character equally as damaged as Martin Clunes', which seems to make sense.

Sad to rate this so low. But honestly, if you're thinking of buying this because you want to know how the two lead characters get on, save your money for series three (which, by the way, is excellent). It took all of three minutes at the end of season two to improve the plot between the two lead characters. Yet absolutely nothing new or interesting happens between them in the 91 minutes contained in this movie. I just hope the writers responsible for this will be gone by season four.

The X Files: I Want To Believe (1 Disc Edition with Exclusive Free X Files Poster)

Our Price: £12.98
New Price: £12.98

Review for The X Files: I Want To Believe (1 Disc Edition with Exclusive Free X Files Poster):
A believer and a sceptic
As my title suggests I'm in two minds about this film, if you consider the pacing, narrative, special effects and the overall purpose of the film, it isn't very good but I do appreciate its themes and the cinematography and the overall atmosphere that is created.

Carter never liked to do what was expected of him, he tended to follow his own intuitions and it worked for the series making them fresh, interesting and utterly compelling, allowing them to run for so long and have such a devoted fan base. I'm one of those fans, I love the series and appreciated where it was left in the last episode; the date was set, the invasion inevitable, the FBI was overrun with alien agents and our two heroes were on the run. The series was driven by more than just Scully's devoted faith in science and Mulder's desperate belief in the paranormal it was also about the escalation of unstoppable forces and unknowable entities, religion played a massive part in the complex mythology as well. What that last episode seemed to say quite poignantly was that you can seek the truth but you can't stop the inevitable though what you can do is put faith in the unknowable, in forces greater than yourself. With this in mind what's been done with the film is hard to justify. It carries along this sentiment, but it doesn't develop it. The film by turns stagnates and goes back on itself.

The film begins with Mulder in hiding and Scully working at a hospital, their living together, but when an agent goes missing rather strangely the FBI, that's populated as I've said by vicious alien agents decide they need Mulders help, the man that they so wanted destroyed.

This Mulder we're presented with seems to have reverted back three series, ignoring the closure he received in the aptly named `closure' he is looking for his sister again, Scully even accused him at one point that every thing he is doing is because of her, a line very similar to this was used in the first series, it has no place here, it's utterly irrelevant. Maybe Carter is trying to say something, or else he is hoping to give perspective viewers of the series a key motivation of Mulder's.

Also although Mulder and Scully's relationship is nicely developed in some senses; their actively together and they share some moving conversations about William (their son, which they were forced to give away) and in particular an end scene"I think it's the darkness that always finds us", in many ways this also goes back about three series, from the seventh series Mulder and Scully's beliefs had started to align this sees them sharing arguments similar to those in the first few series, with Scully refusing to acknowledge anything supernatural without scientific proof and Mulder being the unreasoning man we knew before he laid down the troubles he had accumulated over him sisters disappearance. But Duchovny and Anderson continue to have great chemistry.

The film takes the format of a supernatural thriller; it is successful in being tense. But it's in no way mysterious as the villains are clearly shown. The cinematography of the desolate snow filled spaces is compelling and the dank interiors are well shot. But the pacing is patchy at best. Scully's scenes concerning a difficult patient are disruptive to the narrative flow although they do lend support to the importance of faith.

This film doesn't feel as if it has been made for fans, but to entice a whole new generation to the series, this is probably why it doesn't develop the mythology. From a marketing point of view and looking at the script this doesn't make sense, the themes aren't easily unearthed especially if you haven't seen the series. In fact the whole narrative has the feel of an overly long weaker than average episode of the series, something that isn't going to garner much interest from cinema goers. Carter excelled at weaving action packed mythology episodes of the likes of `713' and `Patient X' with brilliantly entertaining stand alones like `Triangle' and `Fight Club' and this isn't a great way to end the saga, yes it does mix science, paranormal and religious aspects but the paranormal comes in the form of a tortured physic, played by an unexpectedly good Billy Connolly, this doesn't incite the magnitude I was hoping for, the subject has been covered many times in series with better scripts driving it. In this it's simply used to detect the movements of a crazy group of scientist's performing outrageous experiments with stem cell surgery. I just think if your not going to put the effort into creating a great script, that develops and enhances the series, don't bother. Though I was rather excited by the strange undulating inky patterns in the background of the credits, they seemed evocative of black oil and I thought maybe there was more to the film than meets the eye, that Carter had something else planned, but it's very likely that another film will be made and people have convinced me that it was just snow.

I'll be buying this DVD when it's out (if for no other reason than I missed this mysterious extra bit after the credits!) we'll see if any extras can shed light on Carters motivations and intentions. And I will watch it as part of a series that I love as it's a good if not entirely relevant film that fits well into the x-files saga.

Great To See A Volume 3
This set contains six movies, where the previous volumes had only five or four. Even so far into Bette Davis' work, there are still rich pickings and real gems to be found:-

Old Maid (1939) - Bette's first pairing with real life enemy Miriam Hopkins. Their mutual dislike brought fire and energy to their performances. Some of those scenes really spark.

All This And Heaven Too (1940) - This is Bette being good. A period tale of unrequited love. I wish she had done more films with Charles Boyer.

In This Our Life (1942) - This is Bette being bad. She wreaks havoc in the lives of those around her. Lifetime friend Olivia de Havilland plays her good sister.

The Great Lie (1941) - Mary Astor graciously gave much credit to Bette when she won her supporting role Oscar. They all drink so many juleps, I don't know how any of them could stand up!

Deception (1946) - Bette's juggernaut was running out of steam by 1946. This is highly watchable, but not as good as most of her early 40s movies.

Watch On The Rhine (1943) - Not really a Bette Davis vehicle, more of a wartime propoganda jobbie that studies American attitudes during the early years of the war in Europe. Bette takes a good part, but does not seem to get much screen time.

All in all a very good set of movies from a Hollywood legend. Nobody else could be this good by Volume 3.

The Secret By Rhonda Byrne Brand New DVD & Hardcover Book Combination (Amazon Exclusive) (Combination DVD & Book Pack)

Used Price: £18.90
New Price: £15.99

Review for The Secret By Rhonda Byrne Brand New DVD & Hardcover Book Combination (Amazon Exclusive) (Combination DVD & Book Pack):
Its excellent!!!!
Loved the DVD and it really opened my eyes even if it's a bit too Hollywood (you know like the Gillete ads)and makes claims that seem too good (or too bad depending on your point of view) to be true. The book then answers many of the questions raised /claims made in the DVD so they work well together. The DVD gets you salivating and then the book fills you up.

You can interpret The Secret (aka The Law of Attraction) as sort of positive thinking taken to it's logical conclusion ("thoughts become things") or interpret it more spiritually. Although my god Rhonda Byrne is claiming a lot for the Law of Attraction in The Secret (as in you want in it, you beleive in it, you do what the books says, you get it!). Still even if only 1% of what Rhonda Byrne's claims in The Secret comes through it will still be life changing for me or anyone else for that matter.

Good for you Rhonda Byrne!!!!

ps def get book and DVD together.

pps def watch DVD first

ppps def watch alone or with like minded people as its really easy for cynics to pour scorn (you know what I mean - your mate who whenever you mention a new idea/project always knows better and then explains to you at great length why you/your project/idea will fail - we've all got a mate or two like that!)

pppps delivery only took 24 hours which was wonderful

ppppps Rhonda if you or your people are reading this please make a sequel

Frost / Nixon - The Watergate Interview (Exclusive to Amazon.co.uk)

Our Price: £12.99
New Price: £11.75

Review for Frost / Nixon - The Watergate Interview (Exclusive to Amazon.co.uk):
An unmissable slice of history
I have seen many excepts of this interview over the years and have long wanted to watch it in its entirety. It basically captures the historic moment when, during a TV interview, Nixon finally apologises for the entire Watergate scandal. He is visibly shaken, emotional and completely unable to counter the expert questioning from a young Sir David Frost.

As a historical document - this is great stuff. It should be required viewing for any student of american history. The Watergate scandal basically opened the floodgates for large scale media intrusion into the lives of politicians. It also led to the very first resignation by a US president.

I would also recommend that media students watch this programme. Sir David Frost has always been one of the worlds best interviewers, and here he excels. Also included on this DVD is a brand new piece of programming where Sir David talks about the interview - apparently giving lots of insight into why he asked particular questions, and how he interpreted Nixons answers and body language.

Highly recommended.

In fact some of the same dvds are offered by Amazon separately, so if you do not know which episodes are in this set you may already have some (like I did when I purchased this) or you may order some on a duplicated basis in the same order. So beware. For your information I will list the content here so that you can avoid this problem.

This set (The Bible) is the largest TV-based movie ever undertaken, and not to be confused with other films also named"The Bible", some of which are also sold here on Amazon.

The stars here include Ben Kingsley, Gary Oldman, Richard Harris, Dennis Hopper, Oliver Reed, Sean Bean, Barbara Hershey, Jeremy Sisto, Michael Gambon, Christopher Lee, Jonathan Pryce and Diana Rigg. David Leadbetter : The Complete Collection - 8 Disc Box Set (Exclusive To Amazon.co.uk)

New Price: £34.99

Review for David Leadbetter : The Complete Collection - 8 Disc Box Set (Exclusive To Amazon.co.uk):
David Leadbetter the Best Coach in Golf
I bought this boxset last year and have watched it throughly and watched a few DVDs a couple of times to try and get ideas for my own game. David Leadbetter is the best Coach in Golf and has coached many Major Winning Tour Professionals. This 8 DVD set covers every aspect of Golf and in some of the DVDs material is re-told or repeated.

My favourite DVD is this series is the 'Taking it to the Course' one where David accompanies an Amatuer Golfer and watches him playing holes then gives him tips on what shots he should hit and where he should play balls. Basically its a course management DVD and it does prove handy to golfers and high handicap golfers should probably view it to see what they should be thinking when they are on the tee or the fairway or in the rough.

My least favourite DVD is probably 'The Swing' where David meets a 11 or 12 Handicap Golfer and tries to teach him how to play golf. The guy being off a low teen handicap is a good golfer so basically its only tweaking to improve his swing and game. I find myself insulted a bit by the DVD and wished David would have picked a novice or much higher handicap golfer to work on.

This set features all the videos David has done and transfered to one DVD set. Some of the material in the set is quite dated and old hat now hence my reason for marking it down. Also there is another box set out called 'David Leadbetter Interactive' which is all new material and uses state of the art technology and presentation to transfer across David's teaching. It also comes with PC software for analysing videos of your own Golf swing and seeing where you are going wrong and suggests drills or exercises for you to try. It makes this boxset almost prehistoric and extinct. Okay its £10 more expensive but the Golf software is worth £70 on its own. Look for that boxset before buying this one.
