A fundamentally sharper sound

I bought a 40Gb iPod Classic 4 years ago. It recently died and was almost as cheap to replace compared to getting it fixed so I bought the 120Gb iPod Classic. Here's my thoughts on the new model based on having upgraded from the 40Gb model. I didn't really need 120Gb capacity but the next option down was 16Gb and that wouldn't fit the contents of my old model.

The overwhelming impression is of a significant improvement on the 40Gb classic. It's slimmer, lighter, has a much nicer, colour interface and 3 times the capacity at two-thirds the price. I'm tempted to rip my new CDs at a higher resolution now.

The most notable improvement is in the overall sound quality. I would compare it to going from FM radio to DAB radio. It's a fundamentally sharper sound. It has completely enhanced my listening experience, both through my headphones and my iPod speakers. It also handles variable volume much better so you don't keep having to adjust the volume depending on the age of the original CD that was ripped.

The colour, as mentioned in other reviews, is not black but I find the dark, charcoal grey very fetching and actually more tasteful than plain black. It now handles photos and videos and has colour games but none of these features are of particular interest to me. I simply want a jukebox of all my albums to carry everywhere. The battery life is apparently 4 times better than the 40Gb model.

You will have to upgrade to iTunes v8 to synch your music if, like me, you have never been bothered to upgrade iTunes in the past!!

I do have some very minor quibbles but these are insignificant when compared with the improvement in sound quality:

- the click wheel requires slightly more pressure and the middle button is concave rather than convex. Both make the iPod slightly trickier to control when you're groping for it in your pocket!

- despite the improvement in sound quality, there's still no graphic equalizer that allows you to control treble, bass, etc.. separately.

- you actually get 111Gb of capacity. This using up of the advertised capacity to accommodate the operating system is consistent with all other models.

- it comes with the usual white headphones. Shouldn't they be black to match the colour of the model? Either way they are still poor and to get maximum benefit I'd recommend, as a minimum, a pair of in-ear Sennheiser headphones.

- it comes with a docking adaptor, presumably to cater for the change in thickness. It is slimmer than the 40Gb model. However, the adaptor doesn't fit the stand that came with the 40Gb model so I'm not quite sure what it's for? It does like wider than the 40Gb model. The screen is wider, but the actual iPod itself is in fact the same width.

- the back is still the same 'scratch friendly' material. Can Apple not find a material that is shiny, reflective but doesn't scratch when you look at it!?

As I say, these are very minor quibbles. If you have an extensive music collection and looking for a new iPod with seemingly limitless capacity and significantly improved sound quality, this is a good home for it.

Excellent, but I got the right earphone problem.

There are excellent 'phones and for sound quality and comfort I give them 5/5, I would recommend them to anyone. However, after 8 months, the right earphone stopped working and to get it working, i have to hold the wire in a certain place, but for the prce they are, IMO, the best hedphones you can buy.

8 GB? Don't think so.

I purchased this product and when it arrived at my house I was very impressed by apples ipod touch. However when I was syncing all my data (music, vids etc.) I was only to find that the actual capticy of the ipod was not 8GB but 7GB, how cheap.

I would sincerely love to write a review about my lovely new earphones, but alas, I CAN'T GET INTO THE BLOODY BOX!!!!! Arggh!!

I have been brought into the 21st century!

All my friends have Ipods so I thought i would get one. Couldnt afford a Ipod nano saw the Ipod shuffle on offer and thought i would give one ago.
Its very easy to use, holds plenty of songs, is easy to download songs onto and you can take songs off and add songs on easily. An ideal modern walkman!

Good product

Recently bought this case for my Trekstor pocket g.u. Provides good protection for the hard drive when travelling, if just a little oversize for the pocket drive.

Excellent sound but...

Love the product but should just point out that for new generation ipod touch, while it is a dock it does not recharge whilst in use. This is the only drawback if you are going to use it for an extended period ie: a party. If it was not for this one point I would have given all 5 stars. For the money the sound quality is fantastic, almost too much bass, and I never thought I would say that for such small speaker unit. Any controls for other than volume you have to do via your ipod.

still a 2nd gen shuffle

I have an ipod shuffle and the quality of music is good but I don't see a difference besides a lighter shade of blue here.

Well worth it!

I purchased this to connect my Toshiba up-scaling DVD player to my Toshiba LCD TV and was not disappointed. The quality was excellent and I now agree with The Gadget Show that the quality of HDMI cables cannot be judged by price.

Nice Case

I bought this case along with my Classic to protect it from bashes drops and spills and I am delighted with it!!

It's good but...

Let me get the negative out of the way first. Prior to buying the new 2nd generation iPod Touch I owned a 5th generation 80GB iPod Video. The first thing that struck me about the iPod Touch was the inferior sound quality compared to that of my video iPod despite using the same high quality Sony headphones.
I did a google search and apparently Apple now use a digital to analogue convertor (DAC) chip from a different manufacturer in 6th generation iPods than those used in the 5th generation iPods. You can found out more about this on Apple's support forums.
Despite this though, the playback quality is still on the right side of good enough.

Everything else about this gadget is just brilliant.

I had no problems connecting it to my wifi, and the safari browser is really quick compared to other mobile browsers I have used in the past.

The screen is bright and beautiful, music videos, YouTube videos and the BBC iPlayer look really fantastic, like having a miniature HD television in your hands. It's brilliant for catching up with television or watching YouTube while laying in bed.

The iPod Touch/iPhone versions of the App Store and iTunes are really easy to navigate and like the browser load very quick. With iTunes you can listen to a 30 second preview just like on the PC version and any music you download direct to the Touch downloads as quickly as it does on the PC (depending on ISP your connection speed obviously).
The App store is full of great applications, all sorts of stuff from games to music creation, even ebooks and comics. There are some really great free apps on there too like Google Earth, or Mini Piano for the times when you have the odd few minutes to spare.
Some of the Apps are a little rough around the edges but many are quiet cheap, starting at 59p, plus you can download any upgrades for free once you have made a purchase. I downloaded the Crash Bandicoot Kart Racing game and I am very impressed with it, you turn corners by tilting the iPod Touch and fire missiles or jump by touching the screen, and it all moves along with a decent smooth frame rate, all for £3.49.

I was surprised at how small the packaging was that it came in. It is a small high quality plastic case with all the ingredients tucked away neatly inside, very smart.

The iPod Touch is very light and slim, it does feel delicate so you might want to buy a case for it, if you are one who likes to keep their gadgets in pristine condition you will probably handle it with kid gloves until you get it into a case. I bought a Griffin iClear case for mine which fits snugly so now I feel more secure taking it out and about.
Also you can get a firmer grip on the ipod because without a case the iPod Touch is very slim and feels like it could easily slip out of your hand, especially if you have larger hands.

One thing I do miss from the video iPod is the clickwheel, you could just put your hand in your pocket and move on to the next track but with the touch you need to look at the screen to see what you are doing.

I would have given this five stars but because the playback quality isn't as good as the 5th generation iPod I owned I have given it 4, though I would rather give it a 4.5 and only knock half a point off for the reduced sound quality because it is still good enough.

Edit. Some reviews state that the new iPod touch will not charge in docks. I just thought I'd let you know that the Apple USB mains plug which I used for my video iPod still charges the 2G iPod Touch if anybody needs a PC free method of charging.

Brilliant value

Well made case, the sock is a nice bonus (I gave it to my daughter to keep her mobile phone in). Build quality seems very good for the price - no hint of any rough edges as suggested by another reviewer. This is a bargain, I would recommend it to a friend.

Overpriced at Amazon

Can't fault the product and the external speaker is handy for sharing those videos around the pub without the need for earphones. However, the rrp for this is £219 so until the price drops I suggest you look elsewhere

Belkin TuneFM for iPod

I bought one of these from amazon a few weeks back and first impressions were very good. It's made from Belkin, very well-known manufacturer of electrical goods. So far so good. My main reason for wanting one of these was the simple fact that my car has only a casette player & basic FM radio. And so I thought a small well made device such as this might solve my problem of not being able to play my music when I drive. With very little effort (and with a little help from the user guide) I had it tuned into a blank FM frequency and I was pretty amazed with the sound quality it gave out. Okay, so it can get a little crackly if you drive to an area where it may have a slightly stronger radio on that frequency...but it works. Overall, very pleased and it's got to be one of the more useful purchases I've made on the internet. I wouldn't go out without it now. A most useful little piece of kit to have. And, it has no problems syncing up with my iPod Classic whatsoever. Highly recommended and please ignore the negative reviews...this is well worth buying. Cheap, unobtrusive in the car and it works wonderfully.

Ive had these for around 2 months now. these earphones are relatively new. these earphones arnt as bassy as lets say... the ep-630s but the sound on these earphones are much richer, nice high, nice mids, unlike some other earphones which has just nice bass and complete rubbish highs and lows.

i listen to dance, rock, metal, so the higher frequencies mean alot to me.

these earphones are designed pretty well, it comes with 3 different size buds, the middle ones fit me exactly and completely blocks out external sound. the cable is rubber based, not the slippery smooth ones, which are pretty good. the plugs is nicely designed too, covered in rubber which imo, doesnt break easily. plugs gold plated too.

the earphone itself is partially rubber, partially plastic and partially metal. its pretty hard to describe in words, but trust me, these are nicely designed, even putting them in your ear is comfortable because of the triangular grips.


these are awesome earphones and they dont brake easiy. excellent built quality, excellent sound for £9.99! (i got mine for 12.99 - wished i got them now instead :()
