Kung Fu Panda [2008]

Our Price: £9.98
New Price: £9.98

Review for Kung Fu Panda [2008]:
The Panda of Destiny?
Our story centers around Po the Panda (voiced by Jack Black). He is a Kung Fu legend. Evildoers fear him and the people adore him. The Fearsome Five long to fight with him. And everything...hold on, maybe that isn't the way it really is.

In reality, Po works in his father's noodle restaurant waiting tables. He's way overweight and out of shape. But he dreams about Kung Fu and idolizes the Fearsome Five, Monkey (Jackie Chan), Crane (David Cross), Tigress (Angelina Jolie) Viper (Lucy Liu), and Mantis (Seth Rogen). That's why, when it is announced that the legendary Dragon Warrior will soon be chosen, Po leaves everything behind and joins the rest of the village high up the mountain.

Through a series of events, Po winds up being named the Dragon Warrior, much to the dismay of the Fearsome Five and Master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman) who must train the rookie. Po doesn't think he can do it, but he doesn't want to quit. Shifu and the Five want to make him quit. But they'd better figure things out soon because an old foe is about to return to the village intent on destroying it. Can Po save the day?

Since I'm not a fan of Jack Black or Dreamworks Animation, I almost skip this flick. And that would have been a huge mistake. This is a fun movie for all ages.

So let's get the obvious and the only negative out of the way right now, shall we? We've seen this plot many, many times before. But the movie does a great job of making the familiar ride enjoyable.

Part of that is through the humor. There are lots of great one liners and slap stick scenes. It's not side splitting funny, but I laughed plenty of times. And some of the gags were completely unexpected. Yet the more serious and tender moments don't feel forced in the slightest. And the story is fast paced with an ending that made me smile.

The first few minutes are hand drawn animation, but the rest of the movie is computer animated. It looked amazing with plenty of beautiful settings and small details. They even managed to do a good job with the Kung Fu fight scenes. Heck, they were easier to follow than fight scenes in many of the live action movies made these days.

I always worry when I hear that a movie has a voice cast made up of famous people, but here they did a good job becoming the characters. I wasn't left picturing the actor recording the voice. Instead, I bought the characters and got lost in the story.

Okay, so this movie isn't highly original. It's still incredibly fun. And that's all that matters. I'm glad I gave the movie a chance.

The Dark Knight (2 Discs) [2008]

Our Price: £11.98
New Price: £11.98

Review for The Dark Knight (2 Discs) [2008]:
More than worth the hype
The massive media focus on Heath Ledger's tragic death has in its way done this film a disservice - sure, it was publicity, and Ledger's performance really is that astoundingly brilliant, but it tends to overshadow the fact that this entire film is just as astoundingly brilliant.

From start to finish, this is an incredible, dark and tortured tale of a man who realises that in order to truly be a hero, he must allow himself to be painted the villain. Christian Bale improves on his first outing as Batman to bring out these dilemmas and the conflict between his public images (both as millionaire playboy and vigilante) and private desires - if they do another one I really hope he agrees to reprise the role. The story is involving, Bruce Wayne's struggle to understand and thus effectively combat a nemesis whose only motivation is chaos for its own sake is an engaging and intriguing struggle and the action sequences are nothing short of spectacular. The whole film is visually stunning and incredibly well acted on all counts. The fall of Harvey Dent/Two Face is especially well played out and there is not a single moment of this film that is not enthralling. It constantly asks difficult questions of us and our morality - the big finale with the two ships is a great one, though I shan't spoil it with details - and the whole thing is just pitch perfect throughout. Chris Nolan has done a stellar job here.

As for Heath Ledger... I was always a big fan of him, from his early teen fare right through to the end, but this is a performance beyond what even I as a fan thought him capable of. His Joker is sadistic, cruel and yet perversely funny, and he is a revelation. It just makes me sad to think what he could have been doing in ten or twenty years' time if this was the calibre of work he was managing as a younger actor.

So when it comes to The Dark Knight, I say don't trust the hype - for this movie far exceeds it. Hands down the best comic book adaptation I've seen, and I do have a penchant for them (especially for a girl)

Sex and the City: The Movie [2008]

Our Price: £9.98
Used Price: £9.10
New Price: £9.24

Review for Sex and the City: The Movie [2008]:
Not bad, but not great
I was a huge fan of the show. It was funny, witty, and well observed. The characters were very well rounded out.

The problem with this movie is that it feels more like a nostalgic"look at us, weren't we great" than a real continuation. I do applaud the choice to accept the passing of time and have the women older, but the whole thing feels clunky and overwrought in places. Most of the best supporting characters have been sidelined, and Jennifer Hudson's new character is unnecessary and one note (a waste of her talent). The four women seem to have been turned back into the worst and most cliched versions of themselves.

Carrie was always self absorbed, but her maudlin self pity for the whole movie is grating and over bearing rather than just one facet of a complex woman as it was on the show. She's also focussed far too much on at the expense of the other women, which the TV show wasn't half so guilty of. Samantha is underused with a weak story line (though at least its conclusion seemed very Samantha), and Charlotte is turned into a one note 'my life is perfect' type. There's zero movement with her character in the story though Kristin Davis is as lovely as ever in the part. Only Miranda is done any justice in this movie, and given how inspirational these characters were to so many women it seems criminal.

The much vaunted wedding dress and fashion show sequences just come off as self indulgent, and in general the movie just seems to lack the spunk and spark of its TV predecessor. It all feels like a slightly sloppy patische of the greatness that went before. Perhaps that's inevitable, trying to fill 2+ hours instead of a mere thirty/forty minutes? Please don't get me wrong, it's entertaining and fans of the show will enjoy it, I did, but it's not all I was hoping it would be.

Tinker Bell [2008]

Our Price: £11.98
Used Price: £8.00
New Price: £10.78

Review for Tinker Bell [2008]:
Aww! Adorableness
What a lovely, lovely film! It's magical, and glittery and imaginative and beautifully done. The CGI quality is very good, and the ideas are wonderful; from Silvermist fairy manually putting dew-drops on spider webs, to catching the last of the sun's rays for lighting the glow-worms, to tinkering about with a broken ballerina music box... and chubby-cheeked Cheese the mouse, who is almost unbearably cute.

The fairy dust shimmers and sparkles throughout the film and, at its core, it's a lovely story about being true to who you are. Not a theme that will impact adult viewers, perhaps, but it is an excellent message for younger children, and grown ups will be charmed by its prettiness and innocence.

Pixie Hollow is a beautifully imagined place, and with a cast comprising of luminaries such as Anjelica Huston and Jane Horrocks, this isn't low budget cynical nonsense aimed at earning a fast buck before Christmas. It's genuinely witty, heart-warming and smile-making; a film for kids, adults and anyone in between.

The only word that describes it is"darling". Tinkerbell is absolutely darling, and it is highly highly recommended.

Review for The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2 Disc Special Edition) [2008]:
Excellent family entertainment
I'll keep it short and sweet - great performances, great effects, true to th ebook while still fleshing out the story and characters a little more. Fantastically fun action adventure that's suitable for all the family without patronising kids or sanitising the darker elements of the story. Parents should not object to being forced to sit through it with the kids!

Bit dissapointing?

Sleeping Beauty
This region 2 UK 50th anniversary 2 disc edition has I'm sad to say, an authoring fault. It is not properly flagged as anamorphic 16x9, it appears the initial batch as I have had two copies now, are non anamorphic, resulting in the main feature playing with black bars on all four sides of the screen, rather than the usual widescreen bars top and bottom.

And before anyone asks, I have my dvd player and screen set up correctly.

Gavin & Stacey : Complete BBC Series 2 [2007]

Our Price: £12.98
New Price: £12.87

Review for Gavin & Stacey : Complete BBC Series 2 [2007]:
It's just like home - 30 years ago!
Having left my home and native land some 30 years ago to go and live west of the Rockies I was thrilled to be introduced to this series for a birthday present.
The cars, and certainly the gadgets, may be different now, but the characters, the ups and downs of everyday life and all the absurdities are no different. When I was young, we were the Welsh and they - the English - were them. Related, we knew we had to tolerate one another, but at times it was a challenging truce (perhaps like the relationships in the series?)!
Now looking at England and Wales from the outside many years later, the two have far more in common than differences. However, in North America, Britain is called 'England' and I'm quite often asked if I'm English."No" I reply, more in an educational tone than anything else,"I'm Welsh or British, but I'm not English!" This television series takes the best from both cultures and highlights the hilariousness of each while respecting both equally. I really hope the two series come to North America in order to show the quality of British comedy, and to show there is more to 'England' than England.

The Dark Knight (2 Discs) [Blu-ray]

Our Price: £14.98
New Price: £14.98

Review for The Dark Knight (2 Discs) [Blu-ray]:
A film that lives up to the hype
Firstly, this film as the title suggests is one of the few to live up to the hype since the Lord of the Rings. The acting was amazing, the effects were superb, and somehow although this is a superhero, it is done so well that you could imagine Batman and his enemies are real unlike the original movies where they are very comic book. For instance, compare the Joker against the 1989 movie. Both excellent in their own right, but the phsycotic Ledger is much more real than the comic book villain of Nicholson. The same can be said of Gotham itself and Gordon. My only (small) criticism of this movie was the length and number of bad guys. I think that it could maybe have been split into 2 movies, 1 bad guy in each. Doesn't stop it from being a 5 star movie for me!

Wanted [2008]

Our Price: £9.98
Used Price: £8.00
New Price: £8.49

Review for Wanted [2008]:
Sharply directed thriller
Unsatisfied with his life, Wesley Gibson (McAvoy) joins a group of assassins to hunt down the man who killed his father.

From trailers, Wanted may seem like an ordinary action thriller with a stereotypical list of characters but Bekmambetov's picture is very diverse from your run of your mill conventional genres with a truly intense twisting plot and a bizarre choice of direction.

As good an actor as McAvoy (Last King of Scotland) is, he can't do anything about the stereotypical hero character he plays. Bored with life, feeling he has more potential, hasn't found love etc. These conventions of a central character won't surprise the most optimistic viewer. Sadly Angelina Jolie (Tomb Raider) and Morgan Freeman (Million Dollar baby) are also stereotyped and thankfully the plot makes them slightly different.

Wanted is sharp, fast and importantly interesting and diverse. This film fulfils the action genre with guns, chases and fighting. The thriller genre is also justified through the intensity of the central ideology.

Gibson has joined the assassins to hunt down the man who killed his father and though this may scream that idea of unsung hero defying odds to get retribution, there is a charm about the approach in this picture. Despite logic saying that the clichés and conventions of scenes and ideologies are repetitive, the action and likability about the picture will keep you hooked right till the very twisty end, with one of the best final lines to a film in recent years.

The approach is made intriguing through the direction. Very sharp and sophisticated, Bekmambetov is able to create an artistic action thriller with a slow down motion. As bullets fly, as the pounding in Gibson's head gets louder we are given this stylistic vision of slowness and is so different and bizarre that it simply has to be admired. There isn't one bad shot in the entire film and credit to Bekmambetov who has changed the ordinary view of an action thriller into a piece of art.

His advancement and directness help create that cutting edge to the film and we are thrust into Gibson's life head first.

The plot is exciting and always interesting, if some scenes are predictable and unrealistic. There are many twists and turns along the way which makes Wanted an intriguing thriller with excellent direction, if not the best characters.

Review for Lost - The Complete Fourth Season [2008]:
Lost returns to form with possibly the best season yet!
Lost has always been thought of as a tv program best viewed on dvd because of its complex and lengthy story arcs. Therefore, the enjoyment of watching this high-class show can only be increased by purchasing the boxset.

The 4th season of Lost is arguably the best so far. The cliffhanger that ended season 3 has introduced a new plot device which adds greater excitement and mystery to the show. Although this season was shortened by the writer's strike in the USA, this benefits Lost as all episodes have a faster pace. Each episode is thrilling yet intelligent, building up to the shocking climax. The explosive season finale concludes this series' major plot and opens up more questions which will keep viewers hooked for the next two seasons.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor [2008]

Our Price: £9.98
New Price: £9.98

Review for The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor [2008]:
Oh lord help us.....
I cannot even begin to express how bad this film was. Laughably lame, with the weakest storyline I have ever come across, Tomb of the Dragon Emporer is even worse than its predecessors. The dialogue is cringeworthy and cheesy. It was so bad I had to go to the loo numerous times. I know that some probably liked the whole fantasy idea but it just did not work for me, far too ridiculous, even in its attempt at sincerity towards the protagonists lives in danger. No one in the theatre laughed at all or got a fright, which means it can't be just me. If a film makes you laugh, cry or jump a little, then you know its good. This Mummy film failed to tick any of those boxes.
In conclusion, one of the most boring, corny films ever made and does not deserve to be on the big screen. Not worth the money at all.

Review for The Wire : Complete HBO Season 1:
Outstanding - just get beyond the first episode
I watched the first episode of the Wire a few months ago and wasn't sure what to make of it and allowed the box set to gather dust on the shelf. However, while on holiday I started watching 2 or 3 episodes at a time and suddenly it had a rhythm that wasn't there before. This isn't some quick fix TV like Lost or 24, this unfolds like a novel (unsurprising as the show features writing from the likes of Dennis Lehane and George Pelecanos) and rewards the viewer who follows the simple instruction on the cover of the box 'Listen Carefully'. I'm now on series 4 and it gets better and better - I envy those who haven't yet discovered this brilliant series - they have such an treat in store for them.

Review for Casino Royale [2006]:
An OK spy story... but it's just not Bond.
(no spoiler)

I've loved all the Bond movies, ever since Dr No.

Yes, some are better than others. Some Bonds are *certainly* better than others. But they're all the the same action-packed, no-brain-required, formulaic-but-fun glorious mess of boys' toys (explained by a grumpy 'Q' - 'DO try to pay attention, 007...'), glamor girls, explosions, wacky bad-guys and political incorrectness. Yep, this is the good stuff we've come to expect from a Bond Movie.

And then they made Casino Royale...

I'm sure a lot of people will love to see Bond reinvented like this, but if you're an old time fan like me, you won't. All the traditional elements are gone. It's all become deadly serious, to the point where it verges on being deadly dull. Or maybe that's a bit unfair.

If you forget that this is a 007 movie, and think of it as just another slightly above-average action movie, then it works. It's not brilliant, but it's enjoyable enough.

But sorry, it just ain't a Bond movie.
